Hi all, not posted for ages - not needed any of the expert technical advice (not saying the 90, disco or freelander have been without issues - wouldn't be land rovers otherwise) but having just scraped another 12 months ticket on the 90 I said i'd treat him to a disklok especially as 2 mid 1990's 90s have gone missing round here in the last few weeks. Seen previously on here that they need a mod to be more secure but obviously nobody wants to openly post how as that also gives knowledge to the reverse. So would anybody with said knowledge be willing to pm me the facts with pics if possible. Many thanks in anticipation.

Ratty, yours is wider down the sides than the one in this video. LINKY It seems to me that with the one in the video you would be able to wrap your fingers around and grip the wheel and so steer. Awkward yes, but possibly doable by a determined thief.
The one in the video does look as though it has your welding mod on it though!

What mod are you seeing in the video?

At the bottom of Ratty's picture, in the bright light patch, it looks like a plate welded on. I'm presuming that is what Ratty is trying to show in his picture. From 23 seconds in to the video, when the guy turns the Disklok over, there is a similar plate at the bottom of the device. Looks like the plate in the bottom of Ratty's picture. Don't know, that's why I was asking.

The Mod is normally the added wider sections in the middle, stops the disclock being peeled off the wheel ( for want of a better description).

the lower section is where the hinge is, I am not sure if ratty has also welded to strengthen in that area as the photo is not clear. Or if disclock themselves changed the way they manufactured the locks.

Cheers

It's a bit of a knack but I can do it in seconds now. It has to be opened up really wide to fit/remove and is easier if it's done standing outside but doable if seated as well.

The main reason I did that is because I have a mountney wheel and the normal mod leaves the 6 screws/nuts holding the wheel to the boss exposed.
Mine are completely incased to eliminate that form of attack.

This^^^ two half moons have been welded in to prevent peeling

I can see that, now you've explained it. The black trim on Ratty's picture makes it look an original part of the device and so I missed it. Just thought it was a different model to the one in the video with the round hole in the back.

Flossie's looks secure  :)

I think replacing the arm with a dog is going a step too far

Hi all, just logged on this evening and seen all the posts, I understand now, didn't consider that, didn't think it would be possible but obviously so. Am rebuilding a door (rotten frame) at the mo so will get some plates cut while the mig is out. I suppose the professional with a rechargeable angle grinder will just cut the hinge pins, any way of making that harder to do ? Many thanks for all the replies, top forum as usual.

A dedicated professional is never going to be stopped. Eventually it will become an unmanagable chunk of steel you will not use because it is a PITA.

However in that case, you might be better getting a dog like BB's who will smother the culprit in drool. Then you can follow the saliva trail to the culprits lair.

Seriously it is a case of making yours harder to get than someone elses.

Cheers

drill a hole in the arm and attach a bit of chain that loops under the clutch pedal and attach chain to disklock via a padlock stops them spinning the disklock round and using a bar on the arm to peel them off. but still doesnt stop them taking it as i found out a couple of month ago

Apologies if I shouldn’t be revising such an old thread, can anyone point me in the direction of a fabricator (or any helpful meme era who would do a favour) and be able to weld some stell plates into the rear of a disclock in the South Yorkshire area please? I also work in Manchester City centre so can do anywhere round there too

If you're anywhere near Barnsley I can really recommend Vesseltec UK, 01226.732170. Speak to Ian Smith, MD. They're a proper old school engineering/fabrication house...this is the sort of thing one of their team would complete as a 'homer' for you.
