You need the helicoil the same size as the thread you are trying to repair...ie if it is M8 that is stripped, you need a M8 helicoil kit.The kit contains a drill bit, tap, insertion tool and helicoils-as James said watch the swarf.

cheers for that, been qouted £160 to fit inserts by engineering firm who said helicoil wasnt strong enough and he will fit the special inserts that would last, dont know which way to go, £160 or diy helicoil £20, big price difference but if i dont do it right could end up *uck*d:)

I'd helicoil myself, it's relatively easy .. drill, tap, insert, job's a good 'un. But if you have to ask questions about it I'd suggest you might be better paying to get it done.

Pretty soon you'll find jobs you can do, build confidence then next time something needs a helicoil (pretty rare) you might then have more confidence to do the job. Landrovers are a great learning aid! ;)

Helicoils are stronger than the original thread. Only ever done one, on an A series engine block stud, a bit scary but just take your time and it will be fine, and you will have the kit for future use!

Mine held very well and I had more confidence in that stud than the others in the block!

im tempted to try helicoil but when we took the old bolts out something looking like a old helicoil came with it, not sure if it was or could of been a bit of old ali thread, can you re helicoil if its been done before, to be fair helicoil does look easy to do as long as i watch swarf etc, i did notice that one of the bolts that had stripped its thread was shorter then the other, would the drill bit go past a bit of stud if needed ?

goes from bad to worse, lifted out rocker shaft to helicoil bolt holes but then find its already been done, one bolt was snapped off then to make it worse found rocker shaft was snapped in between join, so decided to go down the second hand head route, if anyone has one with rockershaft still on all the better but not one that has been helicoiled before, i will get it skimmed, would standard headgasket do or is there a revised one, cheers, ps getting there lol

hi im ready to take head off, read threads on how to but just wondered about the front of head were belts are, do i have to take anything off that area , i know hoses have to be taken off, thanks:eek:

no head is seperate from front ,often a tricky 10mm headed bolt holding pipe and breathers to the rear ,turbo normally pulls out of the way without undoing exhaust etc but would need a hand to do it

going to try and tap a m10 hole and insert new studs but rockershaft as m8 holes, were can i get a stud with m10 bottom but m8 top, dont know what they are calledm any ideas anyone;)

update, fitted recon head, skimmed etc, starts up ok but no hot air from heater and loads of white smoke, temp stays mid way so not overheating, any ideas what i can do, its doing my head in:confused:
