ok,ok I know all about matey's little swimming trip - it was local.

I'm a qualified mechanic and time served welder/fabricator, I'm happy it's safe. If you guys don't like it, fair enough.

Thought you might be redhand, knowing what it's like on ere ;)

the reasoning being; ****part's dropper plates are about 6mm, box on mine totals
12mm so it's just down to the welds, which I know what I'm doing- they could be tidyer
but I was trying to be quick so as not to burn the **** outta everything, didn't really work mind. 150 amps on 3mm doesn't just stick it there, it becomes part of it! We'll see how it goes anyway, the idea is to put proper dampers on when I can afford to.

Would you say that 40mm will need dislocation cones? I've got away with it sofar but might need them now. And why are they usually at the bottom of the spring? Seeing as the springs are bolted down at the bottom normally.

wtf?? just read that article..

Mr Spencer said Mr Gresham rebuilt the vehicle on another chassis. "Various parts, such as the engine, gearbox and front axle, came from a third vehicle. The axle and tie-bars and rear brake system came from a fourth," Mr Spencer added.

"Two months before the collision he took the gearbox from the fourth vehicle as well. There were parts of four various Land Rovers used to put this car together."

isnt this the kind of thing everyone that has a land rover does?? take bits off another one to replace the broken ones??

its not like he tried to modify parts of a completly different vehicle to fit his..

would you fit miss-matched calipers ?

What do you mean exactly by mismatched calipers?

I have happily replaced a single caliper that was seized - I am more than happy to replace discs/pads in pairs, but there is no 'official' reason that I am aware that calipers should be replaced in pairs.

Ah, having read the article:
Mr Spencer said the calliper on the offside front brake was bigger than the one on the nearside, and this caused the car to slew when the driver hit the brakes.

That's slightly different....

And weld (badly) a rear radius arm axle mounting?? Or drive home at 65/75mph while it was held together with a ratchet strap. With all his kids in the vehicle, Even though friends had offered to take the kids in their vehicles??

Guy was and IS still a complete and total ****er.

i suggest you read the article pal

Ooo wait!
there's more info here than on the article... was this a known guy to the forum?

i dont understand the calipers thing.. how can you fit different calipers?? a bigger caliper than the other?? from a different vehicle? surely the mountings would be different?

Lol, I thought they'd blown things out of proportion at the time (i.e. nothing unusual about changing alsorts of bits and pieces) I thought something had snapped at the wrong time and he'd become a scape goat to a certain extent - I didn't know a lot of what's been mentioned.

Just had a look at me front dampers, I don't think there's anything I can alter at the bottom, even a raised mounting would need to be about 3-4" higher to allow space for the bushes and threaded part. I could do with 4 great big u-bolts to make lower turrets out of - like the tubular ones but they're pretty expensive, would almost be cheaper to buy tubular turrets (like tomcat make).

Will I need cones at the back now I've got 40mm more drop?

Agreed paul,

MORE PICCIES!

Looking at the spring, I think it'll stay put - looks like it'll drop a little bit more but not much. How big a difference would doing similar to the front make? in half a mind to leave it alone.
