Argh stop please you're an evil maniac!! Some people have gambling addictions, some people have lady's footwear addictions - I have upgrades addiction. It affects every device I own, especially ones I can fit myself. It keeps me skint and my missus exasperated.

So, what besides the actual lump would have to be changed? Exhaust? Electricals? From reading around searches (you like these injuns don't you :D!) you said that the gearbox is the same, but with a new input shaft needed and a new ECU or something was it?

I can't say I wouldn't like all that extra power, going up hills in fast 3rd on the very cusp of 4th is a special kind of agony.

Just get the standard 220turbo lump and the engine management. Change the head gasket - they are prone to leaking from corner ;). Don't tune it - no need.... 220bhp shud be enuf, although yu can get up to 600  out of them.

So rad, exhaust manifold etc etc etc will just fit right on? Seems to good to be true .

You're a terrible influence mate :D. I think I'll have to leave this until my missus is driving later this year, might be off the road for a while if this happens. But it looks like there are very few down sides.

So it's the T-series 2.0 turbo I'm looking for, right?

Yes

I would be inclined to get the complete engine bay loom to make sure.
Speak to the guys on the mg-rover.org forum. Especially technozen and mgjohn and drdave.

Is the transmission up to 200bhp? The naturally aspirated 2.0 comes in at 140 bhp which is still over a quarter more power.

This has been discussed in an earlier fred, seems like it's another penguin effect thing. Someone needs to take the plunge and do a write up, if I had the space and cash I'd pick up an ancient Freelander and scrap T engine and have a go sans risk.

its the same gearbox. dunno about the ird and vcu ec.

I read that you can bolt it stright onto the L series gearbox. This is probably more project than I can handle, I have no garage and a pretty limited budget. But if that changes any time soon, you can bet your gosh darned rear end I'd try this and see.

Everyone seems to adore the T series engine. Why the frak didn't they put it in the Freelander to begin with, and all the other K series messes for that matter. Something to do with emession regulations or something??

Have you checked the water pump?
Mine was faulty and was weeping a small amount of coolant But you couldn't see any dampness on the block I only noticed when a pool appeared in the under tray.
Up till then I was topping up the water every couple of days and feared a Head Gasket fault.
Its a bit of a pig to get at but do-able on the driveway

Thanks edge, I don't think its the pump - there's no undertray fitted at the moment (got nicked while I was working under the car. Basstids.) No puddle ever appears, I'm pretty sure the leak is at the tank outlet and it leak under pressure (m-way journeys etc) as the level never drop much below that point. I'll seal it all up and fit TWO clips and refill the coolant - if that doesn't solve it then I'm pretty sure it's HGF.

Hat Man, did that horrible baby crap green chavmobile on ebay a little while ago have a T16 in it?

I actually found his thread on MGR. Seems like he had the T16 Fitted but it was 2wd only. Seems like the IRD bracket wouldn't fit onto the sump or something, might be that one would have to custom build one. Again, very very interesting prospect and thanks for bringing my attention to it, but the more I read the more it look totally out of my reach at this point. But definitely something I'll come back to one day, as I imagine that once a good guide has been written a few folks would like to do it if it works well.

Best get this 1.8 going again then :).

Well I just bought a new expansion tank feed hose (PCH000201) which should solve the battered old leaky one. I'll change and bleed, see if that helps.

For now I'm going to forget an engine swap, and see if I can get the best out of this 1.8. But who knows what the future hols :).
