Hey guys,

Does anyone know what these small shiny metallic looking fragments could be from? This is my coolant overflow tank cap.

I have recently had some overheating issues, my cap gave way and began leaking coolant out. I am trying to rule out the possibility of it being a head gasket leak 😂. Will be doing a pressure test this week. I’ve not had any boiling coolant and it doesn’t seem to be expanding. I have been told by a heavy diesel mechanic mate that he thinks my water pump may have failed and due to this, the engine is overheating etc.

I have decided to buy a new water pump and thermostat (78 degrees) as it’s relatively cheap , just looking for some potential knowledge on what these shiny shards could be? Potentially the impeller or bearing in the water pump has failed?

Thanks in advance :)

Your water/coolant pump has a tiny hole on the bottom that will leak if it is leaking inside. This may or may not be showing any coolant, depending on where the problem is. Difficult to see, I know.
I had to change mine I little while back. A long and somewhat fiddly job, but not impossible and I didn't have to drain all the coolant out. (I don't think, not absolutely sure now, senior moment and all!) But it would make sense to change the coolant and the hoses, maybe.

Thanks mate, will have a look for this. I’ll be changing water pump and thermostat on weekend, think I should bite the bullet and buy hoses too now haha
