I recently put my 2002 4.4HSE into my local dealer, because she kept on losing coolant.

Firstly, they said it was the reservoir and cap - which they changed.

Then they said there was a leak in the radiator - which they changed.

Now they say that there is a leak at the cylinder head and they need skimmed.

Are they taking the pi**?

the problem with the 4.4 is that its very hard to find if the heads have gone, dye tests don't show up even if the heads have gone, I don't know why.

Radiator is the common cause of leaks.

Chances are, if the heads have gone they won't need skimming (unless its been serverly overheated), the normal cause is the head bolts were/are loose, I've seen this a few times, as a rule, head bolts dont work loose so I've come to the conclusion that they weren't torqued up properly from the factory, is the mileage around 40,000? On both the vehicles I've done with head gasket problems, they failed at around 40,000

Thanks Clutchdust.

She's actually got 104,000 on the clock, sao maybe not done too badly.

Best regards,
