Hi all,

this is my first Freelander I have brought, 2nd hand I might say. Good price also.

I have had the Freelander 2 months, not noticed anything wrong with it, untill 2 weeks ago when i could smell something strange and getting the gears into place at say trafic lights. Then i noticed a leak within the car under the steering wheel. Now this morning i went to go out in the car and it started up fine but it wont move forward or backward after placeing it in gear, I would asume this is a clutch problem. Any Ideas please??

er wot model [en ave yer lost clutch fluid]. . . .:)
 
Tis the Freelander 1.8 petrol serengeti 2003 model, and it looks like the fluid is comeing in under the steering wheel.
 
Your clutch master cylinder has failled by the sounds of it, its a complete unit attached to the clutch pedal and the bulkhead, at the rear of your engine you will see a black pot just to the right of your brake fluid resevoir this holds the fluid for the clutch and is attached to the clutch pedal itself.

Its a complete unit that costs about £140 and about 1/2 hour to change.
 
But why does he manage to engage gears but not get drive?
This suggests the clutch is jammed DISENGAGED and that cannot surely happen if the fluid has all leaked out.

Has the master cylinder failed with the pipes and slave cylinder under pressure?

Mad design if that has happened.

It seems to be a combination of both, clutch plate and master cylinder. Tis now with my mate a grease monkey (lol) he will fix it for me.

Hold fire with the clutch plate until you refit the hydraulic system,

Fitting a new clutch plate is quite a task, dealers quote 5-7 hours on labour time.

Conventional way is to remove gearbox, but you'll have to drain oil from gearbox and IRD,

Just as easy to remove engine either with hoist or, dropping the engine from under the hippo using a pallet truck or fabricated engine cradle.

Hopefully it will just be the hydraulic system.

So were you getting the gear lever right into gear?
The clutch pedal must have felt a but strange if an operating lever was bust.

To be honest dude, it did feel slightly tougher to push down, but i did not realise this would be the problem.:confused:
 
Right ok ...

The clutch pedal did seem a little stiff but i was able to engae in gear, however the car did not move forward or backward. On inspection of the car it seems that the fluid was leaking from the rear, also a prong had broken and the clutch plate had burnt out. Total cost for the job £280.
The car has only done 440000 miles and at a cost of £5000 it was a bargin. However I have been reading up on the car and it seems that i will have more trouble to come??? I hope not as it is ideal for myself as I run a kids footy team. But hey ho these things are sent to try us lol
