I changed the middle brake light, fairly routine, went to move it and it would not start. No previous history of not starting and battery was turning the engine over vigorously, the overall impression was of no fuel. I turned it over until until the battery got tired but no joy. I then jumped it with my other motor and it started first turn. ...... puzzled !

I bet you left the ignition switched on .I do not know why but mine a td4 auto hse 2006 model struggles to start if I leave my ignition on for any length of time .
but it does start.

Try giving your fuel pumps a tap where ever they may be, under bonnet or under rear wing.

it's starting and running fine now, which is good, but still an unresolved issue. I get the impression that it has to have been an electrical problem. One other curious symptom is that it cleared the trip meter, which I had been monitoring ..... odd !
