Hi folks. I have a range rover 4.6 HSE, 1996 automatic. My catalytics are broken.... can i remove the material that is inside the catalytic and let the exhaust without catalytic
 
Ah, just noticed your location; so not sure of testing situation in Albania (let us know). Will of course affect the emisions if you remove the cats (and what about the sensors?).
 
It won't affect the running of the car. unless it was stolen from the North American market where they had downstream sensors. It it was stolen from Europe it will only have upstream Lambda sensors so it's be fine without cats. Used catalytic converters contain toxic waste in the form of heavy metal particles. Cutting hacking/drilling at a used catalytic converter matrix will cause a cloud of these particles to be released into the air. If these end up in your lungs then I suspect they'll do rather more damage than dodgy black eagle woodbines made out of industrial waste and 5% tobacco leaves.
 
ok i know that emisions will incrase... the sensors i will not remove...what you can advise to do with the sensors??? let them where they are or what?
 
At the moment the emision control is not a test that could result mot pas... because of other problems about quality of fuel and other things :).

Don't mind my dry wit about the Albanian car market - but do take heed about the danger to your lungs - a dust cloud of toxins from used catalytic converters will do some serious irreparable damage to your lungs if you breathe them in.

Leave them where they are, the engine will still need the feedback to run efficiently.

Removing the cats will not effect the running of the car, and if you don't need to worry about emissions for the MOT then just cut them out, you might even see an increase in power.

Be very careful of the dust though.
 
I'm pretty sure the internals of my cats have been removed at some point in the past and it sounds crap - hard to describe the sound, but it's not pleasant.

I've bought a spare set to put on it now.
 
If you do remove the honeycomb you need to put a pipe through the empty box to stop it resonating.
