Having spent some time looking at prices etc, I am amazed how narrow the spread in values are between 10 year old 100k vehicles and 4 year old 20k vehicles.

From what I have seen, £10 to £12k for a Td5 2002/3 plate with 60 to 90k and £15 to 16k for a Tdci 2007 with 20 to 40k.

So for the extra £5k, what am I buying?

A better engine, better interior, better dash, better heaters, 6 speed box, etc etc

or

Anunproven, delicate, complex bag of problems with little trouble shooting expertese out here on the net?

The car buyer in me says newer, lower miles is best, but this is Landy Zone and less is more! Simple, proven, agricultural technology carries more kudos than state of the art....

Any thoughts...

Don't get me started on trying to decide if a 90 is better than a 110...

I convinced myself a 110 was a bit of a barge, until I looked at a hardtop van body in Belize Green and it didn't seem much longer than a saloon car and the 90 has a tiny amount of load space in comparison.

I'm not specifically looking for a load carrier but I know that once I get a 90, everything I want to transport will be too big...

if it was me i would go TDCI . think about when the td5s came out most were like you ,should i get a 300 tdi or td5 and now your past that and looking foward so buy newer and enjoy not having to fix as much ..lol ... oh that 90 or 110 you cant decide on ....good luck with that:rolleyes:

TDCi is a detuned Transit/Mondeo engine. Its much noisier than the TD5 and I've heard told that it can be a bit gutless unless you work it hard. It also has a shed load more electronics than the TD5 which has the bare minimum needed to run.

With a Defender you've got to base each vehicle on its own merits... each one is going to be different, so just go with the one which suits all of your needs to the best extent. The Tdci IS essentially a transit van engine, but what's so very bad about that?

I've driven a few Transits in my time. They seem to go forever, and believe me I've driven them hard. Gives me confidence in the tdci. That said, my Td5 rocks!!

Lovin my 110 TDCi XS Utility.
Had it nearly 2 years now.

my dad just took delivery of a 11 plate XS 90 and it is very smart. Have to admit it did tempt me to upgrade from my 200tdi 90….

Well I found one I couldn't resist!

A low mileage 57 plate Tdci 90. :D:D:D

Nice and clean, never off roaded.

I think I'll get used to the pogo effect of the shorter wheelbase, I think manouverability in more than enough compensation over the 110.

I think I'll just go and watch the tumble weeds in the Tdci forum now....

Cheers for the advice everyone.

To this end, can anyone recommend a good main dealer? Hartwell only seem interested in selling the posh stuff (Discos, RRs etc).

I've always had good service from Roger Young at Saltash.
Bit of a trek for you though.

Last time I checked, Marshalls in Cambridge had a 90 xs and 110 utility both brand new .. never bought from there though not too far from you... I might go have a look some time if you want me to check again. Gives me an excuse to go have a poke around :D:D

Dad's had a few different landys from Sturgess LR in Leicester, he's very pleased with their service

Don't know which side of Northants you are but they aren't too far
