Hi all

Think i am going to have to change my ABS accumulator. The pump comes on after every time I brake. The brake pedal went spongy after braking down a steep hill. The brake pedal went close to the floor.I think it is the original accumulator on her. It's a '99. It seems fine now after another short drive but pump is still cutting in after nearly every application.

Any thoughts...Cheers

Don't think there is a lot to think about. Change it ASAP. Change the fluid it has moisture in it.

Change the accumulator and flush the fluid through with new, then bleed as there will be nitrogen gas in the system from the old accumulator.

When the pedal goes spongy after sustained heavy braking like the OPs down hill senario. It is a sure sign of moisture in the system. When the calipers heat, moisture content in the fluid within the calipers turns to steam which is compressible, giving the spongy pedal. On cooling below boiling point the moisture returns to an incompressible state returning pedal to normal. Gas within the system would cause a spongy pedal at all times.

Had a similar issue with my ABS pump kicking in all the time & getting spongy brakes but not as drastic as the OP. Anyway, just had brake pipes replaced & braking is a lot firmer now but ABS pump still kicking in although not as often, should this be replaced anyway - mechanic said it's not a problem?

About every 5 presses of the brake pedal seems to be about the norm, but your accumulator may be the problem if that was not replaced.
