you woud have been able to pull disc off with the caliper in place along with pipes and cables i dont think so ,i often find them without springs and seized on wheels this never happens,i havent a problem with springs its just that they are only there to hold disc in place with caliper off and they do make caliper replacement easier they have no part in the securing off disc during breaking thats done by wheel studs and wheels, i think insurance co might be more interested in condition of brgs ,disc,pads ,pipes etc than those screws as for micks last statement they are titted to hold disc in place while servicing vehicle not as brake security
