Hey guys,

Have any of you fitted a stainless steel exhaust? Be it normal or one of the "sporty" ones? I do quite like the look of this one:

I have to say this isn't without a certain self disgust - I've always hated antisocial exhausts but I do like the notes of the systems fitted to the big BMW's and rangies etc - they don't sound like an Impreza.

I'm on the fence, and I sure as **** have more immediate priorities. But if someone has some experience with this it'd be good to hear about.

At the end of the day I just want mine to stand out a bit from the legions of battered FL1's parked in sainburies. Something like looks like it's owner gives a **** - aint no one gonna poke around my engine bay handywork

£295 for the box before trade discount. Lotta money I know. I don't see this car in terms of "it's not worth enough to do nice things to it" though - I'll probably have it until it falls apart and I'm enjoying doing stuff to it. Besides I'm young and foolish. If I were a brain dead idiot I would put it down as a YOLO purchase.

It'd also be nice to get it looking exciting, to get people interested in Freelanders now that the prices are coming down to where they are a good entry level off-road enthusiasts car. As a 25 y/o on a reasonable wage I can afford to run this car and have fun with it - a Defender or Disco would still be out of my reach. Not surprisingly DD gets great responses to his and I think if there were a few more nice ones driving around that have been given some attention it would perhaps generate a bit more interest

.

And is it just me or does it look like it gives you a smidge more ground clearance?

A defender or disco costs less to insure and a disco costs less to buy in the first place

I can't comment on the insurance as I haven't had any quotes for those. I'm not sure you could get a Disco in good nick for under £1500 but I haven't looked - I got the FL by chance rather than choice.

BUT, as it's my daily driver I'd struggle to afford the fuel and road tax on a Disco or Fender - that alone makes the FL much more attractive to me

. Everyone has their reasons, but it'll never be a Disco or Fender - it's just the right balance for my purposes.

Out of question how much do you get to the gallon ? Never been interested in a hippo but might as well compare it seeing as its gone that way

I'm on about 25 combined with the petrol - what do you drive then that's pretty impressive mpg

300tdi get a about 32 on the motorway and 20 round town but lost of my driving is dual carriageway or motorway so a tank gets me about 350-400 depending

I even get about 28-30 out of my Disco shed with 32 MTs on it and it never sees a motorway, the mere thought makes me wobble, that is also a 300tdi 1995, bought in the uk you would pay about 12-1500 for it a i reckon, sadly a damn sight more over here but thats life.

That's pretty much bang on what I get - though petrol is 10p cheaper/l

To be honest I'm not sure - I just did a 108 mile motorway trip and it used bang on a quarter of a tank which would give me 34mpg. I was a bit zippy on the way down too so could probably do better. Trouble is with my MPG I do mostly urban driving so its hard to get the max fugure.

But has anyone fitted that exhaust

I just got a reply for a seldom-active member who I know fitted one (it's his in the pic) and he said:

But you are right to be concerned about the noise. It was pretty unpleasant, a kind of low 'sub bass' which reverberated throughout the car! I only had it fitted for about four weeks, as my kids and partner couldn't stand it any longer.

I have though about it...but if i was going to do it i would have SS all the way down. I see no point in just doing the back box. When my current back box falls of from rotting away (not far!) i shall re-route to a side exit just behind the back wheel i think...i will see what creative juices are flowing at the time.

There is a place near me that will make you a full exhaust for about £350..not with the cat though so you would need a friendly MOT tester

The power flow I fitted to my 1.8 was also a bit loud inside the cabin but a cut down "Race Baffle" from a old bike pipe I had sorted it out
It also had the added bonus of restoring the mid range as the free flowing pipe was very top endy and I think lacked back pressure

Bloody hell that £295 Is a big contribution to when your head gasket goes!!! lol

It's already gone and I replacced it meself (yes ok DD helped too.) It won't be going again as I've fitted an Electric Water pump that keeps the temperature rock solid. That's me story and I'm sticking to it

You can't loose torque with a free flowing exhaust provided the ecu is mapped for it!! It's a myth that 4 stroke engines need back pressure!! Trust me they want none which is almost impossible to achieve on a road car!!

I fitted a home adapted strait through rear silencer to my V6 in an attempt to improve the VE to get the fuel consumption down a bit which it does seem to have done but not a lot!! It does sound good though
