my 2001 td5 discovery started kangaroo jumping at around 2500 revs i took it to garage and got fuel filter changed which was full of black diesel?? garage suggested changing air meter which i did the same day (monday) and also the air filter at the same time, the problem continued, went to another garage as original too busy and suspected fuel blockage only to be told that my tank was full of black diesel and filter was already black again today, tank has been cleaned and fuel replaced another new filter, oil changed and new oil filter but the garage want to change my turbo as they say the wastegate is still a bit sticky and the erg valve is stuck, the original kangaroo problem only started about a week ago and it still goes up steep hills slower than usual, what does everyone think? it does smoke black when reved flat out, it doesnt overheat and hasnt lost any fluids recently please help as i really like my disco and dont want it to blow up, i have had it 3yrs so its not new to me fuel has come from the same garage for over a year, im at a complete loss as to what to do :confused:
 
it is growth in tank- there is enzyme cleaner on ebay

secondly injector copper washers and o rings are notorious
lastly injector loom leaking oil into ecu is another known issue

check waste gate isn't seized as common issue
get tank cleaned and flushed properly first then look at other things
 
ok great thanks i hope they have done the tank properly today as got charged £275 for that and a oil change, will get other half to look at the other suggestions i have been reading about a wastegate modulator and the pipes that go on it causing problems, where do you get the computers that plug into discos as everyone seems to have these and they sound very useful? thanks again for replys its really helpful :)
 
they had the pump out of the tank when i turned up and they said it was all ok after they cleaned it up, dont they need the ERG?
 
waste gate use mole grips to see if free and look at nanocom for diagnostic
 
the oil level has been fine i will check it again in the morning as its just had new put in
 
they said waste gate was very sticky at first but has freed off a bit since they had it in workshop, will check the nanacom website thankyou i think thats what they had plugged into the disco when they had the tank out, is there no other way of sorting out a wastegate problem other than another turbo? what sort of warranty comes with turbos and how much would you pay for one from a scrap yard? many thanks for all your help just trying to make sure the garage isnt trying to cost me a fortune for no reason id be gutted if i spend best part of £1000 and still have a problem
 
when i bought it the man i got it from said he had it chipped up that wouldnt make a difference would it?
 
Garage is taking the **** with a new turbo suggestion. probably a wild shot but check turbo hose internally as they can "delaminate" and this could cause some of the problems your experiencing.
 
a lot of the time, disco td5 kangeroo ing is caused by a faulty boost modulator, its a £25 part and controls the wastgate on the disco td5
 
i did wonder about the wastegate modulator and thought the garage were taking the ****! will look into the de erg thing and try and get that done thanks so much you guys are so helpful :)
 
will the de erg ing have any effect on the chip? and also is there any way of finding out what chip it has and where it is? ive always wondered about it and it seems to be more responsive than a standard td5 (when its running normally) is there a step by step guide to removing the erg? i have a 2001 model on a 51 plate many thanks
 
most of the de-egr kits come with a `how to ` guide. loads on this forum and the net in general.
waste gaet modulator is 2 bolts and 3 rubber pipes. very easy swap.
 
If you're after a diagnostic tool most people have a nanocom evo might be worth joing the disco 2 boys club as they have discount deals with the company that supply the nanocom
 
1. Can you do any of the work on the car yourself? If not you're going to get screwed;

2. The very last thing you want to be changing is the turbo. There are so many other reasons for the car behaving the way it is.

3. Forget the De-EGR advice for now. It's good to do but you need to get the car running properly again before you confuse yourself with modifying it.

4. Re the 'chip' business - the chip is the central bit of the engine ECU. So you can't look at it to determine whether it's been "chipped" or not. You've got other stuff to do, before worrying about that.



This is what I would do:

1. replace the rubber hoses between the turbo and the intercooler - approx £30 tops;

2. Replace the wastegate modulator - approx £25;

3 Continually check the engine oil level for: a. any increases:eek: & b. for a smell or look of diesel on the dipstick :eek:. Both of these signs indicate trouble.

Get yourself a Nano Evo, having tried Hawkeye if I were buying again I would go the Nano route.


It is essential that you work methodically, changing one element at a time.

investgated the wastegate modulator this morning and turned out to be a broken pipe on there, other half has refitted it and car runs perfect no kangarooing up the road and revs right up without any issues, thanks so much for all your help you have all been great so glad i asked and didnt get turbo replaced :) :)
