Basically, biodiesel is around 10% less efficient than mineral diesel due to its lower heat energy. It has some advantages though.

Anyway, I know through experience that if I add an injector cleaner like Millers etc to a tank of bio, the MPG will rise quite substantially. I can get 4-5mpg more. I assume this is because the additive changes the heat energy.

So, is there anything I can cheaply add? Could I add a tiny bit of unleaded petrol and get the same effect? I normally get it in either 20l or 25l containers. If I did add a little petrol, how much would I add to 20l?

Who's played around and can report back?

Miller's diesel magic seems to help as does a dash of 2 stroke oil although it does make the bio look red if you use the bq stuff.
If you have friends in Ireland the equivilant to miller's is Dipetaine....cheaper but does the trick.
 
Just for the record, get a MSDS or ingredients list for Millers, the main active ingredient is 2-Ethyl Hexyl Nitrate which is a cetane improver.

Millers water it down with some other fillers, you can get 100% 2-EHN here

Before anyone asks i'm nothing to do with this company but have used the product as I run 100% filtered waste vegetable oil in my cars. The forum on this site is also the Mecca for running Bio or Veggie

Someone said acetone for the same thing. But in tiny amounts. Like 75ml per 60 litres - that type of amount.

Not tried it yet, but it's cheap enough....

I decided against running biodeisel given that I don't do high mileages in it and the horror stories of it burning the lift-pump out. However, if you're running on it with no pump issues then it might be time to reconsider ... assuming I can get hold of waste oil. The council seems to snap it all up round here and you cannot get it free anymore!

I'm not talking untreated veg oil, I'm talking proper refined bio. Made from waste veg oil, but chemically treated and filtered. It's no thicker than mineral diesel and is a better lubricant and produces less carbon deposits. In winter it can thicken more, but just like other fuels, additives are added. My main problem is it is 10% less efficient. But you can't win 'em all... :)

Oh, I buy it ready made. I don't have a reliable source otherwise I would take the plunge and make it.

Acetone apparently changes the surface tension so helps spray pattern when fuel cold, I have tried it in other cars and not noticed any difference.

How correct this is I don't know

P38's use a Bosch VP37 injector pump same as loads from VW, Jeep, etc a lot of which are considered good for use on Veg. I myself have been using veg for years. The old Citroen has come close to 400.000 miles, and it's not the engine or fuel pump that have ended it's life but rust.

It has have been mentioned elsewhere about using a Pacet type pump in place of in tank one.

Veg is apparently less efficient like Bio, again thickens in winter, but I have never noticed a drop in power or economy on any car I have run on it

Toluene is an excellent, readily available and cheap octane/cetane booster however it's not that kind to rubber or much good as a lubricant so if you use it make sure you add a good dash of mineral two stroke oil into your veg oil. Being related to Benzine, try not to breathe it in or spill it on neat skin. Many aftermarket octane boosters are just pure Toluene with massive price mark ups.

Toluene can often be bought from automotive paint suppliers as it can be used as a paint thinner. Needless to say - don't spill it on your paint work!
 
Utter bull****!!!

I run 400+ miles every week on either bio or veg oil I can't even remember the last time I picked up a diesel pump!!

I'm getting around 29mpg and I don't think for one min that using dino diesel that this would improve?!

In fact next week on Thursday I'm going to drive to Belgium and will document the whole thing with pictures and record the mileage

Why would you put an octane enhancer in a diesel?
 
The rubber funnel I was using to direct my bio into a filter with has gone all soft and floppy.....just sayin :)

For petrol it is indeed an octane booster, in biodiesel it will reduce the viscosity of the fuel at low temperatures, it will dissolve the "gum" often present in veg oils and it will increase the burn temp slightly reducing soot. I used to use it in two stroke race bikes - and unlike just about everyone else running castrol R mineral oil I wasn't having to strip down and decoke the engine and degum the piston rings every other week!

So will a bit of petrol. Raising the octane rating of fuel makes it less likely to compression ignite. That is what octane rating is about. Not a good quality to introduce on a compression ignition engine. :):):)

I know the veggie oil guys need to add a cetane. But I know they swear at adding petrol. Like to see a 300k miles on veggie look like on tear down with orignal pumps and injectors;)

It is a cetane booster and can be bought-en at halfords and other auto part suppliers in the uk:D

Well, it's *supposed* to be a better lubricant and a cleaner fuel. So in theory at least, the engine should last longer.

Anyway, yes, a cetane enhancer is what I'm looking for. Although I'm not looking that hard since although it is less efficient, it is also cheaper! :)
