I know this has been talked over lots. 300tdi 1996. I have air in the fuel system. If I bleed it at the filter air comes out then fuel. All's well until I run it for a short while. Then it needs Bleeding again. All I would like to know is do i look for the problem before the fuel reaches the filter. Or can the leak come from the injector pump and find its way back to the filter? Thanks.

i would start looking at sender in the tank ,sedimentor behind rh rear wheel inside of chassis ,lift pump,if leak off pipes are leaking they will be wet

Leak off pipes renewed. Fitted new lift pump today. No joy. Think it could be sedimenter myself. Was covered in crap cleaned it and now this. Think the crap was blocking a hole. Sender unit I will look at tomorrow when I get home from work. Going to bypass the sedimenter. Just wondered if air could return back to the filter from injector pump. Can't see how myself but strange things happen. Cheers James

not when running ,leak off leak is an overnight poor starting problem ,bypassing sedimentor is a good idea

The top of the tank is the next one , theres a round hatch in the boot floor held down with self tappers to access . Similar situation with crap piling up and pinholes .

Looked at sender unit return was leaking fuel. Sorted that. Apart from might get a few more miles to a gallon, no joy. Didn't have time to remove sedimenter but will try that tomorrow if I finish work early enough. If that doesn't do it. All I can think of is splicing clear pipe in different fuel lines so as to see the air passing through. Starting when I take off sedimenter. Work forward. Cheers for replies. Let you now soon as.

Will be the sedimentor, get rid of it and all will be well, I done mine a while back and it cured all the issues with air in the fuel. I actually replaced the entire fuel line on mine but you can just link the two pipes...

Well at last Car is sorted. ended up being both the sedimenter and the sender unit. Cut the plastic away from the metal pipes on the sender unit and conected rubber hose straight from engine bypassing the sedimenter. Must have had a slight leak for ages as I have never felt it perform as it is now. Going to take off sedimenter when I do boot floor. Thanks guys for your feed back. feels good to get the old girl running again.:laugh::laugh:
