Hi i'm a newbie, just towed a mate home in his freelander, with cylinder head failure, said i would try to help him fix this weekend, does any one have advice that might be helpful, make of gasket, things not to do etc:confused:

what's a 2.6 gaylander?
do yer mean 2.5 V6?
if so, how did yer tow it - it's an auto?

no such vehicle.
all V6 are auto
might be a 1.8 manual

or this is a wind up.

well, if it is an auto, yer might or might not have fooked the gearbox.

anyway, if it's a V6, the engine needs to come out to do the rear bank.
use the upgraded MLS gasket, get the heads skimmed and fit a new oil rail.
special tools are needed for re-timing it.

many garages won't do it because of a high probability of it failing again - they don't want to guarantee their work.
a LR main dealer will tell you that it needs a new engine - about 4 grand.

if yer do fix it - sell it quick!

'Parently there is a 2.6 manual out there, but i guess it was destined for septicity and oz coz all i can find on it is on their sites - although being bound for septicity yer'd a thort it'd be an auto!

well then, the engine don't need to come out, but everything else I said still applies, especially the sell it bit.

forgot to say
get the head off and check the liner heights first. if one or more have slipped, then the engine's scrap and there's no point buying parts.
the head bolts are single use "stretch" bolts, so you'll need a new set.

if you do a search, there's undreds of freds on this subject.

It's not very often that I agree with the tractor boys but Treworgey is right. Fix it if possible, then get rid of it.
