So yesterday while I was under the bonnet I noticed my brake pump was running for a while but thought nothink of it then today I was on my way back from its mot (it passed) and pressed the brakes and my pedal had a lot of travel, seemed very spongy and I didn't really have any brakes to speak of when I got home I checked the abs fuses an relay checked the brake fluid all fine but the pump isn't making a noise? Would it still make a noise if the nitrogen cylinder bit needed replacing or would it stop like it has

Either the ABS relay contacts have burnt out or possibly the brushes burnt out/comm burnt in the motor part of the ABS pump.There is also a small chance the pressure switch has failed on the pump,this is quite rare.
Try a sharp tap on the motor with the ignition on,if it comes to life then its on its last legs.Failing that bridge the contacts in the fuse box after pulling the black ABS relay - its the two large terminals opposite each other.If that works the relay has died.
Both components work hard and are pretty much on their way after 120,000m or so....

Thanks for that il give it a tap and check the relay in the morning is there a way of checking the pressure switch?

Yes,with a multimeter,but do the other two first,most likely one of them.

Also check the fuse box for signs/smells of burning.
