Hi guys,
Noob question I know but from the searches I have done I can only find out the post 1999 P38's have 4 wheel TC. Is this from a certain date in 1999 does anyone know or are there other clues to look for other than just the date?

Just about to start looking to buy one within the month and any help would be very appreciated :)

Matt

Only real way to tell as far as i know is to look at the ECU.

The D version for the 4 wheel TC has 3 connectors to the ECU and the C version with 2 Wheel TC doesn't.

As Saint says the only guaranteed way is to check the ECU. However I believe that it was a BMW change so I doubt that you'll find it on a Gems V8 or a diesel without EGR.

4 wheel TC came with plastic intake manifold.
Late 99 models weren't face lifted models but had the 4 wheel TC.

Thanks very much guys - great info. Should have said but it will be a diesel I will be buying (who can afford to but a petrol nowadays?). Do the later diesels have the plastic intake manifolds too?

Thanks once again,
Matt

Later diesels have the plastic manifold and EGR. Post 2000 models are supposedly better made.:)

In the workshop manual, a lot of intructions are done for both pre-99 and 99 onwards, so presumably there was some pretty major overhaul done in 1999, when I guess full TC came in

Grab a hold of microcat and look for the ABS ECU. It will tell you exactly at which VIN number it changed.

I know of at least two diesels with the later manifold (black plastic) and without TC at all (pre MY99 TC was optional and available only to the 2 rear wheels).

Mine was registered 19/10/1999 and the VIN is XA428XXX (a high 428 too) which should give a rough idea of when the changeover happened. It didn't come with the original order date so I don't exactly know how old she is.

The LR model year goes from Aug 1st,so any XA,YA,1A or 2A LP RR should have the smaller black ABS ECU which has 4 wheel TC.
The only downside to the 4 wheel TC system is that the ecu's can and do fail, wheras the early 2 channel silver ecu's seem to be bombproof.....
Do you really want a 4wd powered by that horrible BMW 6 ?

Just to confuse matters there was an unofficial run of 4.0 Thor V8s with two wheel TC - possibly to use up the stock of two-pin front diffs? There was also a run of 99 GEMS 4.0s! All Thor 4.6s are four wheel TC and the diesels have a grey crossover period too. Doncha love Land Rover? :D

I recall reading that the more recent ECU (4 wheel ABS) was moved from behind the glove box and into the engine bay. If someone can confirm this, that would be a sure way, easy way, of knowing which is which.

No, the ecu remained in the footwell. Way to I'd is simple, 2 ch has a large silver ecu, 4 ch has a much smaller black ecu.

The horrible BMW 6 is better than the unreliable V8:)
