Hi i bought this P38 yesterday with suspected head gasket i got the car back put the head gasket tester on it and the blue chemical should turn yellow it stayed blue today i drove the car it was getting warm and pressuring up so i went to my mates i borrowed a new cap. To start with i thought this had fixed it as i did about 15 mile with no issues even gave it some thrash and temp stayed half way thought i had sorted it then nipped out while car still warm and the temp climbed back up. this afternoon i pressure tested it and lost no pressure then when the vehicle was warm very top of the rad was really warm i touched the very bottom of the rad and that was cool. Any ideas guys as i don't want to whip the heads of and still have the same problem

errrr....

a Hello would nice!!

What year...any mods like LPG to consider ....??

Rads have been known to silt up at the bottom....

Hello i did say Hi im just a bit fed up today sorry :) it doesn't have lpg its a R reg and also the thermostat has been removed already i presumed through them thinking head gasket it also has a slight damp patch in bottom corner of rad opposite corner to bottom hose

also i nipped to see my friend who has a 4.0 v8 series 2 disco and noticed his water really whizzers back in to the header tank like one of them fountain boys having a wee and mine only trickles i checked water pump and it appears to be fine

Isn't the stat in a plastic housing at the bottom of the engine bay near the rad...how can they have taken it out? It forms part of the pipe work!! unless the stat can be removed from the plastic housing that is - never tried it on my 4.6's....

Anyhoot - sounds like the Rad could be blocked - whip it off and give it a good flushing....

oh i thought the thermostat would be in the housing on the engine at the end of the top hose my mistake

heater blow really hot so i think its safe to say the thermostat is working so perhaps it is the rad or at worse the head gasket

I have had 4 Range Rover Classics in the past and only bought this cos it was cheap at £650 i thought well it will break for more but now i have driven it i want to fix it and keep it if liner was cracked wouldn't i have lost pressure on pressure test?

Pressure test hot or cold??

Cold - maybe not

Hot - possible yes

as i say the water only trickles back in to the header tank where my mates 4.0 V8 flows in a good flow obviously i thought thermostat was out but now know its a bottom which is weird lol even though heaters are piping hot could that be restricting flow???

the 2 electric fans at the front there not for the water rad are they? as they don't kick in when its over heated

Cold RAD suggests the RAd is silted up, hot heater suggests there is a stat there as there is a bypass valve I think that allows the heater circuit to function before the RAD. Check the viscous fan is working correctly. On the diesel, there is little or no water flow back to the expansion tank until the stat opens so you could have a duff stat.
