Hi there, I have a 95 300 tdi and the turbo has been making a howling noise along with a rattling sound. It hasn't done it all the time only after a long 70mph run coming off the motorway. Has it gone or is there something else that could be wrong, it has an egr if that helps.

Rattling dunt sound good does it? When the bearings on the spindle go they can rattle - when they get really bad you'll get a v. high pitched 'chirruping' noise too as the impeller blades come into contact with the housing.

Very easy to check... take the intake hosing off the turbo - now make sure all the keys are in your pockets as the last thing you want is some eejert starting the car while you've got yer hand inside the turbo  put your hand into the intake side of the turbo and find the end of the spindle to check it for free play - it should spin easily, with very little friction and a small amount of play. Anything more than a couple of mm or so of play is bad news.

If it isn't the above then your turbo is probably fine - look elsewhere for the rattle ;)

a couple of mm is massive amounts of play for a turbo a couple of mm would see it hitting the housing and firing bits of blade into your engine

Yeah sorry - dint put that very well did I... what I meant was, anything that 'feels like' a couple of mm. Actual play of a couple of mm would feel to your fingertips more like an inch.

They're not designed to run tight though and play in the spindle isn't always an indication of extreme wear. They're designed to run on the film of oil coating the bearings - otherwise there's no way they'd be able to run at the rpm they do (Garrett T2 is capable of up to 200,000 rpm)

and 200.000rpm is slow for modern turbos, race ones run at silly speeds 300,000rpm+ but thats on a rollerbearing turbo
