got my hands on a set of classic 3 spoke alloys. My Range rover 'claims' to be a 1972 classic with steel wheels, i suspect it may be a little latter than 72 but the hubs prevent fitting the alloys. I assumed they would go on with no messing. If my RR is a 72, does it have larger hubs tham the later classic model. Stud pattern is ok it just sits 3/4'' away from the hub face. confused

yes mine was the same

in the end I bought 30mm spacers Stu recommended to fit and even then Stu had to grind away some of the alloy wheel to get them to go on.

Thanks fett, never thougth they would not just fit. Is there a downside to fitting spacers and yes any recs on what spacer to use. I assume that means my RR is an early model. I dont trust the log book, happy to be tax free but not convinced it started life as a 72. What year did the hubs change to allow the alloy to fit direct ?

not sure what year the exact change of bits was, some people say it was 73 on for a lot of changes, mine seems to be a mix of both and I have been told by several people that as its leyland anything could have been fitted at any year. also if its been around 40 years I expect some accident repairs with parts form all over the place.

in addtion it was the fashion apparently to make your early 70s 2 door look like a late one by removing bonnet mirrors etc.

Have you had to do much work on the old girl your self?

I have mixed feeling about the spacers, they must make the wheel bearings work harder as the change the offset however I know a guy running a 420 bhp 2 door with them and no probs reported as yet and he likes his right foot too!

mines been fine so far but low miles on these wheels atm, make sure you use the nuts that come with the kit to fit the spacers and you may also need to swap yoru wheel studs for 46mm ones, best thing is to just check you have enough poking through on one wheel before fitting the other 3.
