might just need a few miles after been stood take it for a run ,does it run /sound ok,is it fresh diesel
 
It runs really well and sounds fine. There was red diesel in before but I drained that and put fresh stuff in. Might try some engine cleaner in the tank. As it hasn't got an MOT tax and needs a VIC check the most I can do is run it at idle on the front garden :(
 
it would be better with engine loaded not long periods of idling , give it a service oil change tappet clearances etc and take it for a run once youve got it finished
 
Just FYI - My 300tdi was smoking exactly like that and, thinking that it just needed a good run, I went for a drive and this was the result:

That is not to say that yours will do the same but, as James says, I would replace the oil, filters etc. Also check valve clearances and injectors, and for any signs of wear in the turbo.

Better to spend a bit of time checking everything over than having to rebuild the entire engine!
 
id say a few mins wasnt long enough to say with an engine thats been stood but you can rule out turbo by just running with turbo to intercooler or inter cooler to inlet manifold hose off
 
Difficult to say, it may be my hearing but it sounds like its got a slight misfire just off idle and doesnt sound harsh enough like a normal tdi lump.
May be worth checking inj pump timing, sounds scary but is a real doddle job.
 
I would change fuel and air filet then take it for a good run so that the engine gets up to operating temperature then see if it still smokes before doing anything else. I like lynall also think you have a slight misfire. But I wouldn't be surprised if that disappeared after a run and a bit of a blow out. I find if mine is just used for chugging around it runs a bit sluggish after a couple of days and needs a bit of a run.
 
Everything has been changed, all filters, timing belt, oil, water pump but the problem is I can't take it for a run.
 
My 200Tdi Defender smokes like heck if I leave it idling for a while, I was queuing to get out of Oulton Park once and it looked like a forest fire when I finally stood on the accelerator! In normal operation there's a slight bit of smoke on start up then nothing.

As said, a good run may be all it needs but it's hard unless the MOT place is a good few miles away.

Sticky injector I had the exact same fault on my series tdi, would clear after a few miles until the next time it was allowed to cool down.
 
Ok so went out this afternoon to check the timing of the fuel pump. It was way out, Im surprised it actually ran. Retimed it and tested it and it seems to have made a difference, still a bit of smoke but may need some injector cleaner and a run. It was pouring with rain so took a bit longer than I was hoping. I'll upload the video in a bit.
 
Check them valve clearances!
Also a 200tdi should start instantly and I mean instantly, if it turns over more then one or two revolution theres an air leak in the fuel pipes somewhere.
The idle screw is the one the throttle arm rests against at a standstill
 
Got some more diesel today and bled the fuel filter. Checked the valve clearances as suggested and together with the timing adjustment the engine is 100 times better. It now starts first time and absolutly no smoke unless you totally rev it. Also adjusted the idle speed as it seemed a bit low as everything was rattling so much. Slight problem is the belts are squealing even though I've tightened them twice.

Nice job. Quite a difference from the first vid. Noise sounds like your alternator or waterpump bearings. You can eliminate each in turn by removing belts temporarily and running the engine.

If its the disco version of the 200 the belt set up is utter ****e, its always the alt belt that squeals, new quality belts will help, surprisingly the ones with teeth are no better than the plain smooth ones.
The tdi will always make some smoke somewhere, but sounds to me like you have got it licked

Got near enough the same problem with mine. http://www.landyzone.co.uk/lz/f7/black-smoke-258436-7.html Blake smoke is doing my head in, embarising at times when driving out and about.
Done everything you have done except the Timing Adjustment as I dont have a clue on what to do.
Is it an easy job to do?? or should I get someone with Experience to do it for me??

Mine is a 200 TDI Disco and the belt only makes a slight squeal when wet, until it dries, but that's because it needs a little tweak. The rest of the time, it's silent. Mine is non-standard though in that I don't have the power steering pump, so I'm only running a single belt between the crankshaft, water pump and alternator. I guess that makes the setup a bit less fragile.

When I first fired up my 200 TDI, it sounded like it had a serious fault making a horrendous creaking sound as the alternator bearings where totally shot. It was quite a relief to find the noise disappeared with the belt removed!
