nice on you sean. thats another heritage landy being brought back to the day that it came out of those factory doors. im looking forward to seeing the rest of the rebuild as i only rebuilt my engine the last week or so and the rest of it is fine on mine but yours is going to be brilliant when its finished. your going to have lots of fun with that thing.

i considered putting the GB back in it the other day - other than that have done bog all to it for ages now

today i again considered putting the GB back in - then remembered that it was a bit noisy and was not so keen on changing gears, so an hours spannering later i had a pile of bits
the layshaft rear bearing had seen better days
one of those darn sync springs had snapped
and theres some loss of the case hardening on the layshaft gears
there's a pile of metal grit stuck within the drain plug
some wear to the rings
other than that it looks very serviceable

wrapping yer chips in it might just be a better use for it

mine were sound when i stripped it , had only a few specks of metal in the drain plug, which were amazin for an ex mil gear box ther usualy trashed.

there's 80k on the clock - and i've got all the old test certs - this box does look like it's had some money spent on it, main shaft, output shaft and all other gears look spot on - i'm assuming their budget didn't stretch to a new layshaft and a drain plug clean

my '62 ser2 box had 85k on it, had a few quid previously spent on it , but like you say, some people just dont see the need to finish it properly,
yer had chance to look at the reverse idle gear etc , mine were ok but have seen them busted ocasionaly ,
i think a bearing change when stripping the box is a must me self , yer can tell the difference straight away , tis quiet to start with
ere sean,any chance yer could post a pic of the end of yer gear stick some time, out of intrest whats on the end of it ??

now that it'll all in bit's i'll do it properly and at the very least will replace all the bearings - i did have a quick look round to see if there was list of bearing part numbers or a rebuild kit online to save me the hassle of working out what's required - but LEGS are rip and you'd think no one has ever rebuilt one of these before as there's next to bugger all useful info out there - even the exploded diagram in the workshop manual is the old type

thers nawt about mate, luckily me next door neighbour is ex army ,he built series fer nato etc, so is handy to help with tricky bits , like yer say legs are dead, lr series stock bits fer box's but mostly what yer dont need, i had a few bits from craddocks ,

i bought four pallets of engine parts the other week so haven't been able to move to actually be able to get anything done - and what with having had that fecking swine flu over xmas didn't help
