I've just collected my first Landy which is a 1994 300TDI 90 hardtop. (corrected my earlier type from 1984!)

Everything seems ok except:

  • The gearbox clunks between 1st and 2nd but no others (unless you select neutral in-between the gears)
  • The steering wheel itself squeeks against its cowell
  • There is an advisory on the MOT which was done today saying: 001 Steering box has a slight oil leak [2.2.D.2e] & 002 Slight play in steering drop arm.

The garage said that there is a kit costing under a tenner which sorts the advisories as it is a common issue.

The gear change issue is most worrying but I couldn't check it before driving away! I have been told that this is also a common issue and likely fixed by a gearbox oil change.

Any ideas??

you can get seal kit for box but depends how worn shaft is to its success ,and were play in drop arm is joint ,splines or shaft ,gearbox baulk rings will be worn if its notchy going into gear ,a clunk could be serious box issue or some other play in drive train

Would this be the case if it is fine when neutral is selected in between? Is the oil change thing likely? What box am I likely to have in a 1994 300TDI.... What boxes will go in and how much is a fair 2nd hand price for the box?

change improves if you wait a little between gears ? oil change may help worth a try , but baulk ring dog teeth wear making change more difficult, a 2nd hand one could be the same or worse unless your very lucky and get a low miler

Do you know what gearbox would be in it or how I can check?

After a bit of searching it would appear that I have an R380 as the reverse is below the 5th position.......

£495 for a recon or anyones guess on an old one! I'll have to see what they say and try the oil change.....

Now I need to find which oil and how much..........

Thanks, if only the "i" in your county was an "a" then you would be nearby!

Lancs...... I will see what the garage say tomorrow, I wouldn't have bought it had I known about the problem first and I couldn't test drive it because their insurance doesn't cover test drives!

to be fair most boxes will have wear on older vehicles ,depends on what you can live with and servicing

but no syncro from 1st to 2nd isn't really a minor issue and something they could ignore.
synchro rings (baulk rings )have triangle shaped dog teeth when good this allows synchro to slide over in the same way a pointed bar can align holes ,once the triangle shaped is worn away unless everything is perfectly aligned it jams like bolt would through holes not aligned by pointy bar

Not really a DIY repair though. I have no idea how they will respond to my email but I will ring them if they don't.

Thanks for your help.

Will update tomorrow.

I've found someone selling a discovery gearbox and transfer box. It needs a new reverse light switch but they are only a few pounds. I am just waiting for confirmation that the box is an R380. If it is will that pair directly fit and replace the ones off the defender?

I'm new to Landys so not sure about the differences etc yet.

:jaw:really??? alarm bells would have been ringing at that point for me.

I have bought several cars but when I test drove it I just left a small deposit and was going back to buy it on the Monday. I went back and they were really busy and I got there later than I wanted because of having to wait for my wife and daughter as I needed a lift and basically I just got swept along with it. The bodywork is very good as is the engine. The only real issues are a sterring box which passed the MOT but has a "very small leak" and this clunking 1st to 2nd gear issue. I sent them an email within a few hours as they were closed by the time I got home but I couldn't ring them yesterday as I was down in Devon all day and just didn't get a chance. I've rung them this morning and waiting for the chap to ring me back as he is just with a customer.

Will update shortly..... The car was shown at £3990 and they gave it to me for £3600 but this was because it was a non part exchange sale and because the rear door is a bit scabby as are a few places on the front door skins. I can get another door for the back and two skins plus re-spray them and sort for less than £400 then the body will be spot on. The chassis already has the rear section replaced and was otherwise solid other than a tiny bit which was fixed for the MOT anyway. The interior is good and the engine is also with no smoke and pulls well etc. Plus decent tyres and a full years MOT.

So basically I have to double d clutch between 1st and 2nd or source another box......

I've printed the advert out which clearly states:

"Here we have an original 300tdi Land Rover 90 Defender, finished in Arles blue, alloy wheels, rear dog guard, runs and drives superb, tax and mot, good straight bodywork, ideal work horse, please call for full details"
