As I'm thinking of flogging the series 3, would I be able to get a 200tdi 90 for about 2.5k or would it be fooked for that price?

Yes, you should be able to find a solid one for that price. Might need a bit of tidying though.

i have just bought 1! it was a genuine 200tdi, everything works, no big nasty dents, chasis replaced 6yrs ago,rear bench seats, 12months mot and 6months tax. higher millage at 180k but its never seen a farm or done any hard work. thers the usal bits of rust on the doors but nothing major.
i paid 1800, orginally it was 2200.
all i will say is you have to be very dam fast, and have the cash in your pocket and be prepared to travell to get a private bargain. but it can be done. i had to wait about a month till i got the oppotunity.
my best tip wud be dont buy anything off a farm. i work on one and all the vehicles get the hell cained out of them

sounds like it's either had a very hard life or has been badly neglected
