Just to let you know my thoughts on the steptronic/command shift feature. I feel that the rev range is too narrow for it to be practical & found myself trying for either a lower or higher gear & not being allowed to select it as it would be outside the operational rev range. Doesn't give you the feel that a manual car does, & I don't use mine. I only slide it over for sports mode & let the car work out the gears when I feel it is necessary e.g. overtaking. You will like the auto box, it really is good & with the fuel shut-off feature when your foots off the throttle it feels like you've got proper engine braking coming down hills & isn't so eager to change up the gears with that "in neutral" feeling that older autos had when coasting down.
Remember to change your crankcase breather filter/valve assembly asap, plenty of info on here re how & why to do it.

Well, didn't expect to start up a barney but it was nice to see the page on the auto from the handbook. Don't care what it's called, as long as it works....
Looking forward to thursday morning when I get my hands on it and am keeping my weekend free for general playing and getting to know it
Thanks for the heads-up chromium - I reckon a haynes manual and some exploration would be in order, and I look forward to loosing my weekends and spare time to fiddling (and dare I say it repairing). At risk of getting flamed, any tips for a newbie willing to get down and dirty with an engine would be appreciated. I'm sure there are plenty of threads about, but merely trying to search for the crankcase breather valve took ages and didn't give any full result - plenty of mentions but no real detail. I'll continue to look around anyway, I'm still finding my way around the site.
Good news on the tax today anyway, should help in the future even if we don't know what's going to happen after 2011.

I think the command-shift name was introduced either after BMW or for the NAS version.

Working on any Hippo is a matter of luck - as lots of things need the magic electronic book to fault find/reset fault codes.
If yu are intending on towing, make sure you get the oil cooler uprated, as they are prone to overheating.
When testing the motor, put it in sports mode and gun it, one of the nasty symptoms is a reluctance to change up, or a shift down then up.
Dont forget all the usual Hippoo faults such as VCU, rear diff mounts, rear chassis cracking etc etc.

Already thinking about getting something to link my laptop up to it, though I've heard it's not always that straight forward.
As far as towing is concerned, the boat I have is really small and not the 30 foot cruiser I'd like it to be. There's a chance that I'll have the odd trailer on full of timber for work, so will look into the oil cooler.

Here's a link to a previous thread about how to change the breather. The filter in the breather/valve assembly blocks up with gunge & the crankcase starts to pressurise forcing oil by the turbo seals & ruining the turbo itself. BMW/Landrover didn't realise the problem till about 3 years ago & now recommend changing this unit every 12,000 miles. Mine had done 53,000 miles & was totally choked. it's a cheap fix & the Haynes manual gives all info.
