Evening,

It's another one of those how do I fit a 200 or a 300 tdi engine posts, but as I keep saying my search box doesn't work, and only shows posts that i've posted myself, so here goes.

I've got an N/A which I'm slowly getting sick of, and I fancy a bit more pulling power. Not necessarily speed, but just the feeling that I am being pulled as opposed to pushed slightly. People keep saying different things about different engines and I'm totally confused, so please could someone clear these questions up for good!

1) What modifications do I need to make under the bonnet to fit a Disco 200 tdi engine, keeping my original gear and transfer boxes (both in the same position)? Is it just the engine mounting points on the chassis and the down pipe that are awkward?

2) I've been told that a 300tdi will just drop straight in, but I've also been told that the mounting points are in the wrong place. Which is right?

3) Does the 300tdi have any kind of electrically controlled magic stuff or is it just a good old standard diesel engine?

4) If I was going to fit either engine, which would make most sense and which would cause less problems for me!

Thanks in advance for any help

go fer a 200tdi , it will drop in no probs . if ya go 300tdi you'll need ta move an engine mount .... the problems you'll have is making all the hoses fit and the exhaust downpipe , niether are a big deal ..
you'll also need to remove a couple of studs from yer gearbox adapter but again its no biggy...

the 200 is very straight forward to fit, just requires exhaust downpipe sorting/water pipe work/intercooler/oil pipes/throttle cable and reposition fuel filter, early 300's have no electrical ecu's to wory about (few and far between), they require different engine mtg brackets welding to the chassis but the exhuast downpipe does not need modifying + all as per 200 (I think that is how it goes)

Alright thanks for the replies.Whwn you say gearbox adapter studs, what do you mean by them?

oh, right, the studs on the bell housing! Hmm, looking into this whole engine swap malarky. It might still work out better to get rid of mine and get one with a 200 already in!

or get a proper engine... will a v8 fit?

Ofcourse a V8 would fit and I would consider it now that I'm going to uni and won't be using it on the run to 6th form every day, but I can't get insured on something like that at 19 can I!? Plus I'd need to change my gearbox seeing as the V8's smash LT77 boxes.

Ay pos i always found V8 were cheaper on insurance than the 19J. Dont ask why, i duno.

I fitted (well had fitted for £200) a disco 200tdi, with gear box and transfer box. I your gona put in a 200tdi, put a disco transfer box in too, makes it so much nicer to drive.

You probaly know the story with fitting 200s from discos anyway; but theres two ways of doing it. Will explain if your interested.

Also, I was using my 19J to get me to school. And the 200 got me to uni, then got me the hell outa it! Thank fuk for that.

The 300 does need the engine mounts moving, hour or twos work with an angle grinder to cut them outta the disco then weld them into the 90. Easy.

My 300 had the EGR wizardry, but i just didn't bother with that, otherwise its bog standard mechanical diesel.

Exhuast is easy to fit, 300's are (apparently) a bit easier to work on, like you dont have to remove water pump to do cambelt, you can get the reinforcing ladder out from underneath without taking engine out, etc.

The 200tdi is the all round easier engine to work on, its closer to a 19J.

How often are you going to do those jobs?

For routine maintenance and the majority of jobs the 200 is easier.

Alright, thanks again for all the replies. I'm just waiting for a reply from the NFU to see how much it might affect my premium.

Pos i thought your N/A was QUICK! thats what ya told us after the rebuild :p

anyway 200Tdi with disco transfer box ;)

Anyone gorra disco transfer box they wanna shift?

I agree, those sorta jobs are not often done on the 300, but they still have to be done.

Asking 'cos i honestly don't know, what is easier on a 200 to do?

Still say 300, but only cos ive got one now :D

My N/A is quick, but its got bigger wheels now and I'm getting bored of it not feeling likes its pulling! I like the idea of a 200 as well.

Yeeeahhhh get your self a V8.........

Then you can go really fast down the road and as soon as you get off road you can drive around all the water that everyone in a diesel is going straight through!!!

V8 my arse!
