200 is the way to go... but i would disagree with Ian and say keep the defender transfer box!

Why would you rather rather the defender transfer box over the disco one?
with the disco one you will get a better top speed/lower the revs at say 60, therefore better fuel consumption. Yes you will get slight less acceleration, but its still a whole much better than his (and my) N/A. Plus they both have the same low ratio so off-road will be unaffected

Ive kept my def x-fer box, cos the disco one was knickered. Like the acceleration, but am not too sure about the 70+mph that can now easiluy be achieved, it is very noisey. Would like a disco one, especially as first gear is now almost pointless!

Right, does anybody on here have a good 200tdi disco engine going cheap that I can make an offer on before I bid for one, or acquire one from somewhere else? The NFU still haven't got back to me on the insurance but I will more than likely go ahead.

Jump on confused.com and run it in there... it will give you a quote instantly... Aim for sureterm they usually come out on top for 90's and Discos.

Bodyd said that footman james didn't ask for more money when he dropped his 300 tdi in to replace his N/A. That bastards wont insure me on a turbo diesel and wanted over a grand for cover on my N/A! I'm only paying 430 at the moment with the NFU, and they're getting back to me with a quote for the 200 tdi engine. Never made a claim or anything, good driver :)

ask them for a classic car policy.

I rang NFU mutual today, and they wouldn't touch me 'cos the engine wasnt fitted by a LR dealer.

Rang sureterm also, they didn' wanna know 'cos im under 21/25.

Confused.com - informed them of the engine, only ONE insurer quoted, £1200.

Try footmanjames again tomorrow, ive had a similar situation with them before. Just ask for the classic car policy.

Alright, will do! How much did you say that you're paying?

Well...
1st year, no experience was £720, only on 4500 miles
2nd year, unlimited milage, £558
This year, again unlimited milage and all mods declared, £427

That's alright! I take it then that classic car insurance is a lot cheaper. I didnt even think we could get covered on a classic policy! Is a 1986 classed as a classic?

Very few classic car companies will do it, but FJ do. As long as its over 15 years old its a classic for most cars too.

Oh yeah, I told them that my engine was a factory fit item, just a later one, so it was a standard LR engine, jus a later/slightly more powerful one. They seemed fine with that!

Wait a minute, why are you telling them its got a different engine in it?

Change it on your V5, and no one will ever know.

When I insure my 90 I give them my reg number and all the paper work comes through with a diesel engine on it.

As long as its a LR engine they won't really care, but don't tell them that you put it in yourself, I told them that I had changed the chassis when explaining why it was worth what its worth (wanted to insure it for what its worth not the DVLA book price) and the girl told me that it was a modification and that it "increased the performance of the vehcile". So they don't have a clue.

I said, NO its a replacement part, after the 5th 6th explination she understood!

Go see Tropic Thunder its hilarious.

Good point, so if I just fit a new engine and then change it on the v5, the insurance shouldn't be affected really?

Yeeeahhhh get your self a V8.........

Then you can go really fast down the road and as soon as you get off road you can drive around all the water that everyone in a diesel is going straight through!!!

V8 my arse!

so v8's can't go in water?????????????????????????
