Hi can anyone help me please. I have a 97 P38 and recently when I start the engine it, the revs shoot up to 2500. I have changed the idle stablization valve and throttle position sensor after looking on forums, this sorted the issue out for a couple of weeks before the problem started again. When I drive the car I can feel it not running properly and you can feel the engine revving more than it should. When it is in drive the revs drop down to 750, but as soon as you go to neutral or park they go to 2500. Will changing the air flow meter make any difference?
Has anyone else suffered this problem and have a cure for it, as it is really starting to bug me now. Thanks Andy
 
Could be the AFM or maybe the temperature sensor for the ECU and it thinks the engine is cold. Cheapest option is to change the sensor-around a tenner and see what happens before you change the AFM. An emission test should show a faulty EFM up as it sounds you could be running rich. Have you checked the resistance etc. at the throttle position sensor?
 
Thanks Irishrover. Can you pleswe tell me where i'd find the temperature sensor, i'm pretty useless when it comes to mechanics!!!! Also what is an EFM? And how can I check the resistance at the throttle position sensor?
 
Its nothing to do with the coolant temp sensor or AFM,what is happening is the engine ecu is not seeing a TPS voltage equal to or less than the stored closed throttle position voltage.
All you can do is check for freeplay on the throttle cable or have the SCTV reset on Testbook.
 
Eightinavee- what is the sctv when it's out???? I get enough of these acronyms at work. Why can't people speak in English anymore?? The guys asking for advice and all you do is throw gobbldegook at him.

Read the post again and work it out,I dont type very well and I'm fed up with fixing LR's and telling hard up owners bad news.
Ok, its stored closed throttle voltage,and if the output from the throttle position sensor is higher than the stored closed voltage the engine computer assumes you still have your foot on the throttle so it keeps the idle air control valve open ready to step idle speed down in a controlled manner,(without the risk of stalling) when you do release the pedal.
If this is no help,send me a PM and I'll book it in and charge £35 + VAT an hour to fix it like everyone else has to.

£35 an hour is cheap. Not everyone on this forum is up to your standard of expertise and is looking for help in plain language. A lot of owners do not have the means to go to main dealers and independants unless they have to and prefer if possible to try and sort out a fix themselves whenever they can. You must surely agree that buying and owning a LR seems straightforward at the time and it's usually later that the sting in the tail happens. Most people who subscribe to this forum do not have the means to be able to go to their nearest stealer everytime they get a problem and rely on information and fixes from others experiences. I never seem to see posts from owners of cars covered by warranty who can just take it in for repair and sign an open cheque. It's the ordinary Joe Soap who has either bought a pup or can't afford to get expert advice from the trade.
 
Yes it is cheap,too cheap and I gave an answer for free as many others do on this and many other forums,what do you expect for nothing,do we all crash round - Testbook fully charged ready to go and do the job aswell ? Why cant anyone think now,why does it all have to be in simple A-Z steps,whats wrong with working stuff out for yourself ?
Tell you what, how about I leave the forum and spend my time doing something more useful ?

Seriously though eightinavee, I respect your feelings-you have access to Test Book and I have Rovacom and also make money from it. The difference is that I try and help people on this forum and others who come to me for advice for the cost of a ciggy and I usually supply the cuppa. Thats the kind of guy I am. The customers come back to me and I charge a fair price. A lot of people on this forum are the same-bought a LR without knowing the "Peculiarities" of owning one. We all went into uncharted territory at first.Maybe I am wrong offering free advice. I have been in the s***e and got help from this forum and make no bones about it. Maybe the advice I give is sometimes right and sometimes wrong but at the end of the day it's another path to follow for the poor sod that thinks that he is facing a mega spend and all is doom and gloom. Your contributions to this forum have been superb, but not everyone is of the same high intellectual standard as yourself and allowances have to be made for that when replying to posts.

Why do certain people get all sanctimonious on this forum sometimes-Jaysus that's a big word....bit of a debate and they take their ball home like a kid. Never had this when I lived close to the dark continent (Black Country) many years ago with all the Yam Yams.......that should liven things up on here!!!!!!
 
Eightinavee-such a helpfull fellow. If you can't stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. Are all Main Dealer "Experts" cloned the same?????????????????
