Finally blocked the egr valve (after driving around for a few months with half power ) & it's gave me back most of the power back on my 08 Freelander 2, but she's smoking black smoke every time I gun the engine (enough to cause havoc to other road users). I've read various threads about split pipe's etc but just thought I'd check with u guy's 1st in case I've missed something obvious. The engine bay seemed cover with fine oil & I'm assuming it's because of driving so long without egr.

I've not checked crankcase filter yet. But I'm assuming it could be oily due to amount of oil in engine area. I remember my fl1 had to have crankcase sensor after blowing white smoke.

Ok, I've removed the blocking plate but now have lack of power (the reason I blocked egr valve in 1st place ). Only a small amount of black smoke but I'm assuming it's just burning off what was left in pipe's etc. (Certainly not anywhere near as much as when I blocked egr valve ). Lot's of oil all around the filter area & where the pipe connects to the filter box. Checked turbo pipe but no splits etc. Any help gratefully appreciated. Rob

If the Italian service means a good burn-up along the bypass then I've just done that

The FL1 has a crank case filter, the FL2 2.2 TD4 has an integrated oil separator. Oil covering the Denso starter could come from crankshaft
seal or blow back from intercooler hose.
White smoke from exhaust could be egr cooler or head gasket failure - dealership seem to go with the worst case scenario of gasket failure, so beware.
I tried egr blanking on the inlet manifold but found this gave poorer urban economy and water vapour precipitated at the plate. At 124k I found very little oil contamination of the egr and inlet. I had an egr cooler failure replacing this with the redesigned FoMoCo unit and used the old egr cooler to
rig a bypass for the cooler hoses.
