If I'm replacing the rod end, I cut the exposed thread off before attempting to remove the nut. This way the nut comes off without spinning the taper free. The taper then needs cracking in the normal was.

Honestly, the job's the doddle - just ensure that the nut is properly free before breaking the taper free I had no problem doing the second side having coming embroiled with unnecessary hassle on the first LOL
