Do you mean the maf in the air intake pipe? If so I have unplugged that before and took it for a drive, it made no difference whatsoever

no, the maf sesnor has no control over fuel, its simply there to manage the egr valve on the edc system.

The map sensor (cant remember where it is in the bay) is a small box with a pipe leading from it, it measure the manifold absolute pressure ie boost.

If we are still talking TDi 300, it doesn't have a MAP only MAF, injector sensor, coolant sensor, crank sensor.

Are you sure? Im sure mine had one?! You've got me thinking now! But of thats the case then tests on the pump and injectors would be next.

Well I'm pretty sure. If we talk about TD5 then it does has a MAP as well as loads of other sensors such as AAP etc etc

Then that suggests to me that it's not working correctly or at all.

You can buy after-market MAFs on Ebay for about £25-30. I've had a few and they've always worked perfectly.

Black smoke is a sign of over-fuelling. This means that the ratio of air to diesel is not correct. This can be caused by reduced air-flow into the engine resulting from:

1. old, blocked air filter; test the car's performance with the filter removed;

2. rubber turbo hoses that have de-laminated internally and are partially blocked under load. They need to be taken off the vehicle for examination and eventual replacement.

3. Blocked inlet manifold. Whilst the EGR valve was /is in place the inlet manifold can get choked with a tar-like substance, which reduces air-flow into the motor.

I understand that that is a commonly held view, but when I have replaced MAF's on both TDi 300 and TD5 they have run better. All those vehicles had been De-EGR'd.

The td5 does use the maf for fuel trim control. Not sure why it made a difference in your case, i have seen the fuel maps, they dont have maf compensation. They do have air temperature compensation, i cant remember if the edc has a temp sensor in the maf or the inlet manifold.

Can i bin mine out the inlet then ? i have binned the egr set up , mine s 300tdi EDC ?

I need to find out if there is a temp sensor for the incoming air in the maf. Because if there is then it cant be just removed. You would have to write it out with a new chip
