Hi guys, bought my p38 a couple of days ago, took it for a hard test drive pin stayed dead centre, drove 200 miles home after buying, absolutely fine. Did about 10 miles yesterday, then a couple of hours later jumped in and within 5 minutes it had overheated. Turned it off and within a minute or two it back to normal temp. Same happened again a few hundred yards later. Got back under normal temp after 3 or 4 minutes. Coolant looks ok, oil doesnt look milky.
This is my first p38. Help please.

Excuse my stupidity, but would it unstick by itself or would i need to remove the thermostat to test it?

If it is losing it's wax it may not be opening properly. Best thing would be change it. Don't go for the cheap and cheerful option. Fit a proper one. Or it may end in tears.

Ok well i took it for a spin just now, and it was fine, bout a 10 minute hard run. Was going to send it to my LR specialist for a full service next week anyway. So ill ask him to have a good look. Cheers again!

The cooling system on the 4.6 MUST be fully functional, especially with weather like this, or disaster will occur! It's only just suitable as it is. The good news is that it's fairly easy to maintain :)

Well i had to put half a litre of water in it as it was below cood fill level, since then shes been fine. Will see if the level drops over next few days.

OK it's a bit harder to maintain than that :p but I'm glad it's behaving itself at the moment :)
Just get it checked at the very least as engines don't just randomly overheat every now and then, so something's on it's way out.

As mentioned, sticky thermostat or fan's a likely cause. If it turns out to be the fan and the rest of the system is fully functioning, Datatek has a proven mod to use the electric AC fans instead of the viscous :)

Not on the V8, although the mod can be used as back up. The viscous can only be eliminated on the diesel:D

Hi, is it possible to use Datateks MOD on the 4.6 petrol? I have a spare set of fans in the shed and have been thinking about the fan MOD. I will be towing our first caravan in 3 weeks time and just a tad concerned about the cooling although mine has never played up.

Based on the above yes, but only as a backup! I believe it uses the AC fans though rather than fitting new ones, does your P38 have AC?

4.6 should already have that facility as standard providing it has Aircon.

Yes, mine has A/C and it is a set of A/C fans that I have in the shed. Mine is a MY2000 and I think wammers has mentioned recently that the A/C fans come on as a back up if the temp gets to high.
sorry Wammers, beat me to it.

Doesn't it kick in at a temperature very close to the overheat though?

Don't know the threshold temp for aircon fans to come in on the petrol but ECM will also cut power to and disengage aircon compressor at high engine temps to reduce engine load. Eg standing in traffic in hot conditions.
