Crazier than a box of frogs on acid
Hi all.

I thought I'd share this as I remember a thread about this a while back and thought I'd give it a go seen as some internals of one diff i have are shot. :)

And owning a series means I'm constantly skint :p

The only bad thing about doing this is I won't be able to test it for a while as the series is coming apart again very soon for a strip down, bulkhead repairs and 5 speed box conversion.

So here's the knackered spider gear housing and a pic of how one should look as a comparison.

At some point the housing where on of the gears sits has picked up and has a fair bit of metal missing. Also the back of the gear has ground away too.

So whacked it all back in and layed down a few welds.

Then realised my welder (tis only single phase 185amp) isn't nearly powerful enough so will take it into work next week to use the 3 phase welder :D

Will also chop the short shaft down so I can run it on the road on to a pay and play site then refit a proper length shaft when I'm there.

I will post up with pics as i progress with this. :)

Welded like that it will almost certainly break, cut some pieces of nice thick steel (5mm+) that will drop in the gaps and weld them in, it will be a hell of a kit stronger then

Welding is not finished yet but was thinking about putting some reinforcement in to make sure it's strong enough to hold. Not that I'm fussed if it breaks as i have a few axles lying around i can pinch a diff from :p
And to be perfectly honest I'm more worried about halfshafts letting go when at a p&p

Eventually i do hope to have an air locker fitted but saving for megasquirt and all the other jobs on the series that are more important makes it a bit difficult to save up

we welded diffs like that for ages when we used them in rear wheel drive axles to race bangers/stock cars and such.
dont think I ever had one break up, but seems a good idea the OP sez...

tried doing it on a minirod racing on a very bumpy track..... snapped a cv joint like a carrot.

happy times, but long time ago now ;)

Wonder if this would work in a discovery diff
Using another short shaft n then switching them over at a pay n play?
Quite a good idea really and costs nothing

This diff was from a discovery :) Fitting disco axles to my series ;)

Good to know the diff is likely to hold up ;)

Halfshafts are what I'm worried about! Got a feeling a may get through a few :p

cant see pics as at work and there boring,

but assuming that youve just welded it up...drift boys do it alot, i had it on my old defender (no good on road as it scuffs tyres and isnt really legal),

uncles got his series welded up and has been for 3/4 years, gets some abuse off road and hasnt snapped it or the halfshafts yet (this ones on rear)

however has done a few UJs, not sure if its related though

I know quite a few drifters, the few I know that work or had worked at fab shops won't just weld it up, this is only from experience, one of the lads I know doesn't weld the gears together at all just drops a plate in either side and welds that to the gears, this has been tested on a rx7 drift car and held up fine, as cars as I know this car ran out of grip on the rollers and never got a full power run done, safe to say that method got tested!

Aye just welding it up (not finished it yet though) and not worried about tyre scrub as I'll have a shaft cut down to fit for travelling to pay and plays etc. Then change to a full length shaft once there and in the muddy stuff. :)

Good to know it works though :) I'm only welding up the rear too. 3wd should be enough to get me through everything but the worst of mud.

We usually put in another couple of gears in to bind it up then weld over the whole lot.

Then again I have a few proper lockers for landys now no need for welded ones any more

There was a thread showing someone locked the diff by welding the crown wheel and pinion together loads of people said hell what a great idea and some nu
Prices actually did it i believe was quite funny!
