Cats on petrols from 1992

cats on diesels from 2001

Newer diesels have a cat and a dpf some manufacturers combine them in the same space some split them

Don't know where you got that from but it is not correct. All Land rover diesel models had a cat fitted from 1992.

Both my 96 and 2000 have a cat.

Don't know where he is getting his information. Cats fitted to diesels from 1992. Cat and particle filters from 2009. One other thing of note is that whilst many would say smoking awareness campaigns and smoking bans have reduced lung cancer figures. If you look at country by country graphs for cancer reduction, they almost exactly follow the introduction of catalytic converters on motor vehicles. Very interesting. :);)

VOSA have been most helpful in answering my emails, so I've asked them why their information hasn't been been more forthcoming to MOT testers and owners who will be affected. I've pointed out that the wording in their test manual gets the right result if it's followed closely, but wouldn't it have been so much easier to clearly state that diesel vehicles are not subject to the full CAT test, so there can't be a refusal for a missing CAT where one was fitted from new

It is quite plainly stated in the MOT guide which vehicles must be given a full cat test. Only spark ignition vehicles qualify for that. Compression ignition vehicles do not.

so are you saying removal of a cat on a diesel p38 would not fail the mot?

According to construction and use regulations as the vehicle has been type approved whilst fitted with a catalytic converter. Removal of it is illegal under construction and use regulations. Will it fail an MOT if you remove it, maybe not. But VOSA don't seem to be able to answer that question in a definitive manner, so why would you expect me to know better than them.

The tester can fail a car for missing exhaust components! So strictly speaking just replacing a centre box with a bit of straight through pipe can be a fail. Not that many testers would fail it if the car isn't excessively noisy.

The 2010 European directive on standardising the vehicle test throughout the European union which was supposed to be done by 2014, has not yet been fully implemented by many countries. They keep putting it off. Britain being one of the main culprits. Many British cars would NOT pass the Spanish test that is for sure. If it is fully implemented here, many, many thousands of cars would have to be taken off the road.

Many wouldn't pass here in France either. However failing lots of cars and taking them off the road would be good for the economy:rolleyes:

Well my little Clio passed its test with a few advises, No indicators, no side lights and no hazard lights !!! ( it was the connector on the steering column that needed cleaning). Never got away with that in England. They have a system of fault gravity and mine were the least serious so it didn't fail.:) They were working on the way to the test by the way then sod's law took over

Take it in with a non standard item fitted. I have seen some really rough cars driving around in Spain that's a fact. But the lads father in law had his Merc 4x4 failed in Spain for side steps that were not on the spec sheet, even though they were genuine Merc steps. And after market stick on window tints. Was told the only way the window tints would pass was if he had pukka Merc tinted glass fitted. He had to go to the main dealers to have the side steps added to the vehicle spec sheet. If that comes here there will be turmoil. :)

Agreed, tow bars have their own doc's and they are red hot on tyres. If they are not as specified on the reg. doc then you have no chance:)

One of two things will happen. Either thousands of British cars will be forced off the road, or there will be a two tier MOT, were for full compliance a European standard certificate will be issued, so the car can be driven in Europe, or a Britain only certificate were the vehicle cannot be taken to the European mainland. I cannot see the government shutting down the multi million or even billion after market industry. Which is what would happen with full compliance. Many do not know that it has been illegal to fit a pattern catalytic converter that does not bare the European standard conformity stamps to any vehicle made in or after 2004.

Complete replacement exhaust systems must also have compliance numbers stamped in them. That's why when I went for a SS replacement I went for one that was exactly the same pattern as OEM with the correct compliance numbers.
