Just to clarify. Diesel Engines. The security code is implanted in the ECM, it cannot be removed or changed. The same code is stored in the BECM. When the ignition is turned on the BECM sends it's code to the ECM. If they match the the ECM becomes active. Out of sync is when the BECM code becomes scrambled and does not match the ECM security code. The engine will turn over but will not start. I believe the GEMS is similar. On the THOR the engine will not turn over in an out of sync state.

Yes correct, but in my experience in an out of sync condition a GEMs will not turn over, but I believe a Thor will .(I have not experienced a THor out of Sync, but is based on what I have read,)

Maybe i got that the wrong way round then. I usually do. :):)

Some time ago I replaced the RF receiver in my diesel P38 with the latest (at least I think it was the latest) it cured the battery drain problem I was having. Anyway I had a similar problem at an Esso garage. I couldn't lock the car with the remote and the engine was imobilised. I got the missus to fetch the second key fob and that worked fine. Once I got home the first fob worked fine. Very odd.

First time I've heard of a MK3 receiver playing up, are you sure it's the MK3 and not a MK2?
