Hi Guys,

Just got my very 1st Rangie and will be possibly the most reliable P38 of all time as i will not be using it :D only but a week or two a year at best.
Call me mad but I'm having a mid life crisis  and wanted to own RR  cant afford to run it to be truthful but what the hell, what have i been paying a pension for .

Now my question is why are there so many problems with a car that bears a Land Rover badge after all said IMO it only comes down to lack of maintenance surely ?

Will post a few pics of my new love over the weekend, a 1 owner V8 1995 in Epsom Green and a tan leather interior and just 42763 miles My uncle never used it either but was fastidiously serviced from new by Main Dealer In Cambridge. This is where the main dealer contact now stops in the cars life and all you RR wizards will hopefully help me with any problems that I may encounter. I'm handy with spanners but my lift does not go all the way to the top when it comes to finding solutions / probs

Actually it comes down to penny pinching bean counters at LR using crap quality parts as well as poor maintenance.

Welcome, sounds like you have a winner, a quick recap, so your uncle never used the vehicle?...;)

So his butler put the 42,763 miles on the clock, did he have private usage or was this just collecting the shopping or on estate business???

Are you located in Cambridge-shire or has the vehicle been re-located to your abode (it helps in case someone is able to help with tools/diagnostics)?

Anyway welcome again, you have a known base so should have a good vehicle, but I would check the airbags for cracks/air leaks as this could be your first problem due to age and lack of use.

I think many of us are in the same boat, although probably with a less pristine starting point!

You forgot to mention the ridiculously over-complicated yet primitive design. I've never had a car before this one with electric windows and sunroof that need to be manually recalibrated every time you disconnect the battery. Or had to pump the brake pedal x number of times within an interval of y seconds whilst patting my head and rubbing my tummy counterclockwise with my left hand to switch the TCS off.

You are not the first to make that assumption. Lots of newbies in the Gaylander section have made the same mistake.

For what it is worth, my take on it is that the manufacturers are only interested in making a sale. The more bells n whistles, the better. They are not interested in maintenance or longevity issues, because they don't have to pay. It doesn't only apply to LR, but to most manufacturers nowadays.
That is why there has been a spate of cars that you can't change spark plugs without engine removal (Vauxhall), side lights that can't be changed without front end removal (Peugeot), brake light bulbs that can't be changed without 12" fingers or rear interior removal (Volvo). New Nissans that have to have rear cameras, coz you can't see out of the back.
That is why the Disco 3/4 needs the body to be removed for maintenance.

Get used to it :(.

Not many cars of P38 vintage had lazy locking that allowed the windows and sunroof to close from the FOB when locking the car. Yes it's over complicated, but it was ahead of it's time in electronic terms.:)
I must be ill, defending the P38:rolleyes:

Oh dear your going to be shocked if you think starting it once in a while will make it reliable.

On another note LANDROVER have the most secondhand cars still running on roads around the world !!!

Where did you get that from? Just possible with the Series I suppose, There are more Renault 11's and Citroen Deux Cheveau's running here than there are Landies:)

Utter rubbish old boy. If you added up every LR ever made and if all of them were still running it would still be Toyota by several miles. What do you restrict your definition of the world to? Home Counties?

less of the young :p no the entire world dont forget the army although our tin made armour can's have been removed.

looks like LR is a declining market....

Search results for 'land rover' - How Many Left?

Buick and Jaguar topped this year's list of brands sold in the U.S. that demonstrate the greatest general dependability, with Lexus, Toyota (nyse: TM - news - people ) and Mercury rounding out the top five. Suzuki (other-otc: SZKMF.PK - news - people ), Volkswagen (other-otc: VLKAF.PK - news - people ) and Land Rover were the bottom three brands on the list.

o well one can dream. in most cases older cars that are not landrover are scrapped i dont see many 1996 vaxhals fords ect ect on the road mad hatter good point but thats new sales although in future terms you could say its declining :)
