the rear window has been broken on the range rover i have just brought and i wanted to replace the bonded window that has broken (see photo of windw covered with cloth), i have a good friend looking at trying to remove the window on one he is braking, he thinks it can be done with a thin flex wire and a sawing motion. i don't know.



and the second thing is it was advertised as a bit smoky and low on power (compression) as i was only going to take the multy lpg system off it i was just wondering if it was worth getting the engine sorting... piston rings or leaking inlet outlet valve seats?. it was a good price so can afford to throw a few hundred at it. Any help would be good. thanks.

Don't know about the rear window, but I fancied the wheels from that one when I saw the price it was going for on ebay....

I saw this on The Bay. Was tempted to buy it for parts. Isn't the broken window the one full of aerials and such? I imagine it'll probably damage them taking out the glass.

The bonded rear window is nigh impossible to remove with a cheese wire , the replacement window comes with all the seals bonded to it already , they are only bout £60 brand new and only take about an hour to fit,there are a few screws holding it in under the seals , just lift them and you can see them clearly, bed the new one in clear silicon, and tape it with masking tape on the rear edge till it drys.

Cheese wire rarely works. If it catches on the glass it'll shatter it. Cutting the bond with a very sharp, long bladed knife is the pro way. Lots of long shallow cuts. Don't try to force the knife in, you'll just get stuck.
Before you start, look for any wiring going into the glass. If it's buried in the bond then make sure that you can cut it out before you bother doing anything else.

The antennas fired into the window , just exit with spade connectors , you can't really damage them.

I used to train fitters for one of the largest vehicle glass companies. Trust me, you can chop them off or bury the new ones in bond.

I had to and got it for £335.11p i hope its a thor engine as it has multy point lpg and its a 1999 4.6 hse range rover. I'm expecting the worst so i don't get upset when i go to collect it. he says it runs but a guy who was going to put it right said cylinder 3 was low on compression and it smokes never got round to getting it fixed
.

wow! what a piece of kit. looked at the smaller ones and they cost more than the range rover but don't they work well. a friends going to try taking the window out of one he is scraping so if he can do that (i think he will) then its just a mater of cleaning it all before sealing it back.

would this be a item from main dealers or do they do a patern type for far less money?

Used to take them out with a worx sonicrafter and a small blade attachment. And while we are on the subject I could do with replacing the bottom moulding below the glass, the black has come off it and is showing a kind of rusty chrome, so if anyone has one lying around after removing a rear screen let me know. Tah.

From memory I think they are genuine, just surplus stock , I think rimmer bros have some . If not pm me and il try to find the number of the guy I got mine off. Trust me, it's a nightmare to wire out

If you use a non flame heat gun on glass it goes soft Supple

I've had the pleasure of using one ,its good as stripping bulk layers of paint without causing warping, but no good at getting in the corners , unlike sand blasting. My boss bought it as help for stripping paint of the Aston martins i used to do instead of costly chemicals before, plastic Granule blasting. Oops big mistake as intelligent as he is it doesn't work on aluminium . Boy did we laugh but it has its uses it can unjam rusted boltS too clever machine

you can not use silicon to bond in the rear window, need the correct stuff , regards remover use a hammer to break away old glass back to bond line then cut back with a stanley and scrapper .

Why not ? They been using it on fish tanks for years .
