Hi all,

I have a 1996 disco 1 3.9 v8 done 69000 miles.
No problems with starting until today.

Went out greenlaning for about 5 hours.
Stopping periodically and turning off the car.
Every time started good a gold.

Then, after a normal stop, went to start the car and it only not turn over.
All the ignition lights came on as normal and, when I held the key in the starter position, I could hear the starter motor slowly whining into life. However not enough to even crank the car.

Had some other people with me and we tried connecting mine up to another battery - no difference.

Clicked the immobiliser a couple of times to see if that was an issue but no difference.

After about 15 minutes we were about to tow the car back to the main road and I gave it one last try - fired up straight away.

Was fine for the rest of the day.

Is this a warning of something about to die or has anyone encountered this problem before?

Any help much appreciated.

Chris

Tell us how you did this first?

if its anything like my v8 - its the engine temp sensor. occasionally telling the ecu not let you start the thing.

I blipped the key fob a couple of times to lock and unlock the car.

Checked the display and the red light was off which I assume means the immobiliser is off.

The starter motor slowly turning could be an electrical problem due to water from your green laning. I'd check (remove clean & refit) all the earth connections you can see under the bonnet and also the supply to the motor.

If you engine was immobilised the it wouldn't cank.

Could be just a one off, as u say the rest of the day was fine.. lets hope so.:)

Thanks for that.
All remove it and have a look and clean if necessary.

Hopefully it is just my disco reminding who is boss ;)

Had same problem recently. Starter motor soaked with muddy water. Cleaned it all out (with petrol, see search) . But mine had worn brushes after 20 years so it still would not work.

Had it reconditioned locally this week. £67. Ready for another 20 years. :clap2:

Did silicone the motor wire in an attempt to keep out most water.

I say starter aswell, not uncommon to get intermittent starting faults purely from a ****-brimmed starter motor!!
