Look, this a no brainer. Read post 16 from johnP38 he has it right. With no check engine light it means that the BeCM and ECU have lost sync. You need a syncmate from BBS or some other suitable test kit that resync it.

The volt meter would tell you if the voltage is dropping under load to a level that confuses the ECU's.
As the engine check light does not come on it could be loss of sync, again it can be caused by low battery voltage.
If it's loss of sync, you need diagnostics such as a Nanocom EVO or a syncmate.
And Datatek got there first in Post #4....:p;):D

Hi All,

Ok, first thing is that the car IS running again and I would like to thank everyone for their help.......but i'm not 100% convinced it was a sync issue.

I tried everything suggested and some other things suggested to me outside this forum but nothing worked. I even booked an Auto electrician to come out to have a look at it on Friday.......won't need him now.

Here's what fixed it......I took the cover off from around the drivers seat so I could see the multi-plugs for the BECM and I took them out one at a time to check them and they all seemed ok, BUT there is a white plug in the centre which has four prongs and there was a grey coating over all four prongs (corrosion) so I cleaned them and plugged it back in and tried the ignition switch and the Check Engine light was on.

Now I think it would have started there but I decided to use my Sync Mate anyway just to make sure and it fired up first time.

Anyway, thanks again to everyone for you input, it really is appreciated.

But we will never know...!! - Did the cleaning help (of course it did need cleaning - but was that the cause or just a random find??) or was it the Sync Mate that worked??

My money would have been on the Syncmate - but I ain't never won on the lottery so maybe a bad bet - but thats how we play the game!!

Top job ongetting it working again in anycase and letting us all know your findings....

As soon as I had cleaned the connections at the BECM and plugged them back in the Check Engine light came on and it had not come on with anything else I had done because I was checking after every step I took.

I would say it wasn't the sync mate because the Check Engine was on BEFORE I plugged in the sync mate.

The sync mate is a great tool though and I will always keep it in the car.

The door lock is still not working with the key but works ok with the remote so i'm guessing that's not connected to the starting issue.........need to get that fixed quick.

Lastly, i'm in South Lanarkshire Scotland so if anyone ever thinks they need a sync mate, get in touch and i'll see if I can help.......mine is a 1997 4.6 on GEMS

Good to hear you got it going. Could be that the plug you cleaned was preventing the BeCM from communicating with the ECU which would also prevent the check engine lamp from coming on. Maybe some of the BeCM guru's can advise if the white plug you refer to is linked in any way to the ECU.

Regarding your door not opening. Pop off the door card and check that the rod from the key lock to the lock actuator is connected. On mine the metal tab on the end of the key lock where the rod connects was broken off. Repair was cheap and simple.
