Hi all, so I'm rebuilding the front hubs on my d1 300tdi 1994 and also upgrading from solid to vented discs.

I was advised to get rtc6776/7 front calipers for vented discs, I just otto the stage where I lot them on and the bolt holes don't fit the bots - too small.

Can anyone give me part numbers for front calipers that will bolt onto my d1 axle, I think they may need to be defender ones??

I'm stuck now as I need the cart his week and shops are closing.

Thanks for any help
Dave

Thats where I got the damn things from! But the holes are too small for the bolts, more searching seems to think I need defender ones stc1267/6 but I don't want to go searching unless I know thats right.

Just noticed that you've got a 94 300tdi, there was some crossover of parts between the older 200tdi and the very early 300tdi's .... might be the problem? I've had this issue several times with mine.

I had a problem like this and but it was only a mil or 2 too small so I just took a round file to it and hey presto it fitted

I was wondering about that but I kept asking myself the question "do I want to be drilling brake calipers?"

It is only about 1-1.5mm too small so I guess it's do-able, won't be able to return them though if something else don't fit.

you can drill them out difference is ones imperial other metric metric been slightly bigger, the only difference is holes for bolts ,defender calipers are larger but mount the same because piston diameter is larger ,the only other thing you need to look at is brake pipes some 2 some 1 ,defender ones are allways single on 300

Ok I'll drill them out.

The pipes are sorted as I have some T pieces and a flaring kit so I can make up some plumbing for it.

If you are doing any off roading i read on here somewhere that the vented discs can fill up with mud which kinda defeats the object so bear that in mind too.

Nah the most offroad she gets is a rally field or campsite:) but I do a fair but of trailering with braked and unbraked units.

I had the old brakes fade on me once in Cornwall and I nearly shat myself, Vented ones sound very useful.

I've packed up for today now, off for a drink or two:) tomorrow I'll drill them out and have another bash.

Ok, the calipers are drilled and fitted very nicely, no probs with wheel clearance etc:)

BUT then went to start plumbing in the pipes and it turns out the flaring tool I bought wouldn't flare a paper drinking straw:mad::mad: Lots of bent mangled bits of copper pipe and not one usable flare.

Yes I know the rule - buy cheap buy twice, so what the hell tool do I need? What is a GOOD reliable flaring kit that will do 3/16 copper pipe??

And where to get it in a hurry?

Dave

I knew you had the wrong calipers!!

Might be better to get a garage to make something up for you because good flarers are very expensive!!

have you tried halfords not a fan myself but are open weekendshttp://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_partNumber_121882_langId_-1,never used one but someone may know ,ive allways used sykes but a bit pricey for home use

Just take all your unions and basically ask for this fitted to this, this to this etc and measure what length of pipe you need.

Most old skool garages will have flarers, but you might even find Kwik fit do, and they're open Sunday's!

I can't remember any job that has fought back so hard....

While I was sitting there swearing at my crap tool, motorbike matey from next door pops out to o somewhere, spots me, comments "don't tell me, crap tool?" err yes mate I says, two seconds later he drops a nice sykes flare kit off and leaves. Ooh, nice kit, easy job, pipes fitted:):) bottle of scotch going his way soon :D

Got it all fitted up to the flexi's, the old ones are still clamped off, I was hoping to make the last joints, the ones on the inner wings, nice and quick so I don't lose too much fluid. Do you think I can get the bastards undone? No fecking way, they have been soaking for a week but both are jammed solid.

So, in light of the not very entertaining thought of running two new pipes (one is very long and goes round bulkhead) all the way back to the modulator block, is there anything else I can try before torching the blasted motor???:(:(
