I am expecting some abuse but I have to ask.....What is the plastic tube with fins on the bottom for covering a diesel air filter...and should I take it out to let more air in?
tiz the water drain - do not remove.

if, heaven forbid, any water gets drawn into air filter, it can drain out of that fitting, rather than being drawn in to engine - summat yu dont want.

OK. got that. Really appreciate the time and patience. why does it cover half the air filter? I am trying to improve the breathing on my 2.5 n/a diesel so appreciate the advice.

This is a sleeve that is black plastic and the fins sit below the air intake on the enclosed box that holds the air filter. The rest of the plastic body covers the air filter above this. When I look at the filter it is like new under this plastic thing so I got wondering.

yu know wot, Gratch on the 200TDi air filter, at the front, is the water drain - an ickle rubber thing with fins - ie a plastic tube with fins on the air filter.......

Oh yeah, know what ya mean now, I was thinkin ribbed/finned water drain on bottom of diesel filter. Dunno what motor just googled 'land rover air filter' images- I'm sure buster has done summat with a filter like that.

its used to make sure air goes through all of filter rather than just one end nearest sunction opening on filter the fins spin air for same effect

I think I did take it off my 300Tdi when I did my last filter change. I had some problem with it I remember. Either it was stuck to the old filter or wounldn't quite fit on the new one. Cant remember which.
Had no problems since though. The new filter fitted fine without it.
Dont think mine covered quite as much of the filter though. Will have to have a look later, pretty sure I left the old filter in the garage somewhere.

Gratch was right , its a cyclone - larger particals of dirt and crap get thrown out to the insideof the housing due to centrifugal force and then drop down to the bottom of the air filter housing . An air filter will draw air uniformaly across the whole filter medium , unless half of its blocked or wet .

ah, bugger:scratching_chin: I might put it back in then, does seem better without it though. Oh well trial and error.....just don't want expensive errors. All advice and opinions very informative and much appreciated
