Have you ever driven alone off road and got stuck.nearly got stuck on a byway which didn't look to bad.what's your experiences???

I go laning all the time on my own... I know the lanes, have a fully charged mobile, tools and recovery equipement.

As long as you are carefull you won't have a problem... Lanes i don't know, i normally walk the first 1/2 mile or so and see what it is like. Also a few lanes around here that i stay well away from when on my own.. Very chalky, steep and narrow!

Walked one the other day and decided not to do it.lanes change daily so hard to know what they are like from week to week.do you take a ground anchor with you

If you need a ground anchor on a green lane you shouldn't be there.

Got properly stuck in my own fields the other winter went through the frozen crust into knee deep liquid mud. Just as it was getting dark, no means of getting out and three miles to walk home. Had to leave it there and winch it out the next morning. Not a problem at all compared to getting stuck on a lane though.

yes laning all the time by myself when i built my 90 no others in the area at the time. Stuck yes but self recovered, blew my gearbox up on the off slip m11 after some laning down stanstead way on my own. Luckily my old man towed me back to luton. While i waited for him i whipped off the propshafts as somthing locked solid (my box) 360'd the landy on the off slip. Even low range 4000rpm dump the clutch never worked to get me off the road onto the verge. I got my top speed of my 90 being towed behind my old man i think it was 72mph from buntingford to Baldock a507. Can't beat good old rope and hand signals had towing down to a fine art by the time we got back to Luton!

after some experiences yesterday i certainly wouldnt go alone.

Went out to do a bit of laning but nothing too boggy as im currently on road tyres until I get my new boots.

driving along a track that was a bit rutted but not too bad, came across an area that can only be explained as churned by the farmer who had decided to tie a few cheap panels together across the area aswell. had to climb across to open the makeshift gate and then be towed through as we didnt fancy reversing 2 miles back along a single track road.

a bit later in the day we came across another single track lane that had a boulder in the road about 500 yards in, we moved it out of harms way (took 2 people to move). another 500 yards and another boulder, this time part buried and took 3 people to move. further up the lane and we came across a puddle to one side of the lane that looked ok but to the right was a load of dirt that made us suspicious, turned out the hole was around 3ft deep and covered half of the track making it near impassable. Could have done someone some damage if they just tried to drive through :mad::mad:

If we were out alone there is no way we would have got through and before anyone asks yes they were legal byways and had been checked before we went out.

Some of ya might remember me getting stuck few months back when the missus came on here asking fer help after id got meself stuck!

Drove into the edge of a freshly turned field and got stuck upto my sills.Even the farmers son didnt want to risk getting his tractor stuck so down to me digging with my ferreting shovel for 3 hours in ****ing down rain and putting bits of bricks under the tyres but i got it out eventually.

Lesson learned after this adventure!

Yes but only on lanes that I'm already familiar with.

I drive a Freelander and haven't got stuck, ever. The trick is simply "When in doubt, don't do it." unless you're with others who can sort you out if things go wrong.

Think the farmers don't want the 4x4's on there land so they put obstacles in the way.it's not right and they should be reported.byways are legal rights of way unless closed for a specific reason.

they are legal rights of way, but I was trying to say its not worth going out alone. Even if its tracks you have done before (like the ones we did yesterday) there could be a nasty surprise waiting for you. most of the obstacles were positioned where you could not see them and would have only found them if you walked nearly all of the lane first (first 1.5mile wouldnt have worked for one lane). The second lane was only accessed by a track that would have been very difficult to negotiate backwards (similar to the first).

They will be reported but without seeing who did it I dont hold out much hope for anything further. The lane may be repaired but it can happen again.

Methinks you are preaching to the converted mate - only the very experienced go out alone and even then they have international rescue's phone numbers or their local equivalent!

got stuck on our tod once. had to use the winch to slew us around 180 degrees then waffle boards to gain traction. We were actually just off the lane because the farmer has started building a house in the middle of the lane!

as for ground anchors. They save worse damage occuring. think about it. lead vehicle stuck, can either sit there spinning making a mess or control extraction using a winch. I used mine for the 1st time last month, a friend lost traction on a rocky step-up and was going a little sideways. nothing to winch off, so set-up the anchor which gave him enough grip to crawl up in safety.

I am usually a lone wolf when laning, (often have others in the car with me though) and there have been a couple of times where I've thought 'oh ****!' but haven't ever got stuck on a lane yet! There are only a couple of points where I have to really concentrate to make sure the vehicle keeps moving forward. Looking forward to some group laning when a couple of my mates finally get their own 4x4s :D
