It's probably an earth problem - electrical issues on a Defender usually are, in my recent experience. Try using a jump lead attached to the chassis or battery negative, to the negative on your lights, to test. Check for circuit completeness when switch on to rule out chafing/breakage, but...

as ever, electrical issues on LR = earth problems. Remade all connections with new bullet connectors, reseated earth, all ok. But nightly puzzling at the time, and took some detailed poring over the wiring diagrams.....

thanks all for the info. Used to have a 109 Safari and commuted to work in that, and took it all over the place. Wife is keenest on the Defender, so there's no issue with the leaking doors, and other such problems. Have a car to cover comfy miles in so usefully utilitarian is fine. HiLux is...
