Thanks Harry and Landyfox. Looks like my preventative measures haven't come to much. I'm thinking the play might just be a combination of everything being a bit worn rather than one thing. Perhaps I should just put it back together and keep using it until something actually breaks.

I think there is some confusion here - when I say high lift I mean a normal trolley jack that can lift up to about 530mm (as opposed to a basic car one that only goes to about 380 ish). Just googled high lift jack and I seen the other sort - I'm not using one of those !

Well Eeek, I was asking on here for advise from the more experienced so as to avoid an accident ! Everybody has got to learn and thanks to the great help from everyone I am still here and my Landy is safely jacked up and I'm learning loads !

Thanks zeaphod. I thought it might be a bit unstable doing it that way with just the one stand in place (especially if you jack it quite high) but I didn't actually try it. Will give it a go ! Cheers.

thanks Blue / trax. OK today I took the half shafts off to check them. The splines don't look very worn. There is a very small amount of play between the half shafts and the drive flange but there seems to be quite a bit of play at the diff end. Not sure how much to expect so took a quick...

A couple of questions already - seen a video where the chap uses some sort of sealant to stick the gasket on, what is that stuff called? Also, can I take the half shafts out without draining the diff oil or will it all just come out? Thanks.

OK thanks for that. Just been to Halfords and got their 200 piece socket set (down from £300 to £125 at the moment) and some new axle stands. A new mechanic in the making !

Thanks daveo, I rang a dealer who recommended 265/75 boost alloys with AT tyres as I am going over soft sand. He said the extra width would help so I'm on the look out for some second hand if possible. Good to know they are interchangable with the disco ones though. Cheers.
