Hi, can anyone help me fix this problem? It sounds like the clunking is coming from the back and only happens when changing down gear in over run(most noticeable when going quite fast). Also there is quite a clunk when changing up a gear unless you spin the clutch quite a bit. It's a 90 defender 2009 (puma) with 55k miles.

I have checked the prop shafts for play but they seem pretty solid but there is some rotational play but reading other threads on here people say that is normal (?) I also used a large screwdriver to check for play in the UJ's but they seem ok on the face of it but I haven't removed them to check - just in-situ.

I also read about wear on the rear half shafts and drive flanges. I have just checked this and there is a small amount of play but not too much. However, if I jack up a rear wheel and put it in gear I can turn the wheel quite a way before it stops. A tiny amount is due to the play between the half shaft and drive flange but is the rest normal or is it likely a problem at the Diff ?

Sorry if I'm asking stupid questions but it's my first defender and I've got very little mechanical experience (but I'm learning fast thanks to this excellent forum). Thanks. Tim.
