You can't put silicone on plug surfaces but you can with contralube. It doesn't affect the electrics at all, apart from keeping them dry, brilliant stuff

I use Contralube,a bit pricey,but bloody excellent.Its used on boats and stuff so you know it'll be good.I've used it on connectors for Ronbox,it doesn't interfere with electrical signals at all. Cant recommend it highly enough I don't work for them or have any interests in the company.
