Speed cameras

Hi All,

Just a quick question as I am still new to driving over here. When on the road the speed cams are announced with a sign and then you have the lines marked on your lane does it also take pics on the other lane too? I saw that a bit ago when a motorbike was on the other lane it flashed. Could that bring. trouble or they just are allowed to take the pics where the lines are marked on your lane?

speed cameras take a picture of the whole of the lanes I only know this because I had a dispute with a ticket I got so I asked for proof and they showed me the photo of the 2 cars passing at the same time and tried to prosecute me and the other car together but they could not prove who it was that caused the camera to trigger so we both got away with it

Usually the whole side of the road , some can get you both directions now also

be aware that we also have mobile speed cameras they are white vans with Safety camera plaster on the sides but the new ones have cameras on the sides and front as well as the usual back one through the window.

And then there are the average speed cameras on gantries. My favourites, as they stop people speeding. (Pet hate).

Don't forget, unless you receive a ticket within 2 weeks of the incident they can't get a successful prosecution.

camera detectors - a good way to keep your speed in check.

A lot of people do not know how the average speed cameras work and yet it says what they are Average speed ,set over a distance get to the other end before you should and BINGO. I have a speed camera detector in the car but it really wants updating but also if you have a sat nav they will warn you where the fixed ones are .

good morning,i have both,but use the camera detector more,and tis a matter of 20 secs to update,its so easy. I find that I am even more aware of my speed when its on,the cops are bloody sneaky over here as well-they are so bored!!!:yawn:

Fixed speed cameras have to have the lines on both sides in order to determine a speed of both carriageways. I.e if its a single carriageway and the lines are only on one side. They cannot judge distance of speed on the aide with no lines. They use the lines a bit like a mini average speed line by working out how long it took to get from one line to the next. There activated by proximity sensors.

PS the average speed cameras on motorways always seem to trick the simple minded, I always see some BMW driver doing 70+ slam his breaks on at the camera, speed up then slam his breaks on at the next camera. I just think derrrrr

we have what looks like a speed camera in Maidstone that faces the oncoming traffic,there are no dotted lines on the road.Anyone got any idea what it could be?I've been too by various people that its to catch drivers on the phone or not wearing seat belts,but that sounds cobblers to me.Its a proper speed camera looking thing,not a video.

Truvelo speed camera, sensors embedded in the road. On some installations, the sensors are on both sides of the road, and they change the direction the cameras facing now and again, such as at Cranwell on the A17.

It's the normal yellow camera .same as a normal roadside camera but pointing the wrong way

Loads more ANPR cameras now being installed, ready for the removal of the road fund licence disc.

It's been there Couple of years. We have normal speed cameras elsewhere in town, one of which is almost opposite

Average speed camera's rather than those which work at a fixed point are usually signed as such and distinguishable as they have one camera per lane - they can be front or rear facing. On motorways they are usually only used on a temporary basis in roadworks.

On motorways with variable speed limits the camera's are only active when a speed limit is shown - but beware this can include the national speed limit. Radar operated cameras have the cross markings on the road and two photographs are taken about a second apart - the speed is measured by the number of lines the vehicle crosses between the photo's and this is used to calculate the evidencial speed. Gatso camera's work in this way, not sure how the Truvelo ones work.

A word of caution though, no amount of speed camera detectors will warn you of the unmarked police car behind you....

On some stretch,s of the M25 average speed cameras are only functional for less than 30 hours a week unless accidents decree they should be turned on.
There is a story unconfirmed by the D.O.T that when the average speed cameras were left on as an experiment at the Dartford crossing 58000 cars were caught within a 16 hour period and this led to there intermittent usage sometimes only a 5min window
