I know theres hundreds of threads like this, but I just want to be sure!

Can I literally just go down to the local supermarket and buy veg oil (SVO?), and stick it in the fuel tank? I understand that it is best to start at 50/50 with diesel, and progressively put more and more veg oil in til I reach a happy medium between cost / how well its running.

Its a 2.5TD 19J.

Oh and what type/brand of veg oil is best/cheapest.

It does work. you can't tell the difference really. bit more smoky when you start, might be lumpy on start up if you use 50/50 mix (depends how knackered your land rover is to start with). I have no idea if it will have any long term effects, time will tell. Mine gets heated before it gets to the pumps and I think that helps the fuel system cope with the extra viscosity.

Tesco.com deliver mine with my shopping.

Have run mine on 50/50 tesco veg oil/derv for about 8 months with no problems. Just pour the veg oil in the tank then go and stick about the same amount in derv in. This mixes it all up and off you go.

i use 3 ltrs veg to a tenners worth of diesel. veg first then pump in the diesel. always end up chatting to curious peeps in the petrol station.

long term effects? your diesel pump is lubricated by diesel so expect it to wear out a bit quicker, then anythings a bonus.

my motor runs smoother with veg oil in there , idles a bit quicker and drives a bit better with a tad more power.

replace the fuel filter more often than not and use diesel magic regularly with a tank full of neat diesel. your injectors might need cleaning/overhauled so be prepared for that.

all in all though its worth the effort , even just for a better running vehicle although id cut a 50/50 mix down to perhaps 30/70 oil/diesel during the winter as oil becomes thicker with low temps.

Just make sure it is pure corn oil as they tend to put soya oil in as well an apparently it dint like your Injector Pump. Rapeseed is the best oil to use. according to the perceived wisdom out there at the moment.
Yeah I read that somewhere... something to do with it having a lower freezing point and not 'gelling' or whatever its called so quickly when it's cold.

I think everyone is happy that running on SVO isnt an issue, yu can debate for ages about ratios and long term failures rates blahblah blah - i've run a TD for in excess of 15K without issue and am now running a Tdi on nearly 100% - i pour it in and it runs

But - now that winter is soon to be here everyone knows that using less SVO per tank is the best route - however

Has anyone run on SVO throughout a winter period using any form of heater system - if so could we have some details of make of exchanger and valves please.

I ask this as very few (ok none that i have asked) companies will provide any long term user test results so i've come to the conclusion that i'll have to do my own research based on what people actually run - and ya never know at the end of this process we may be able to put together a highly reliable, effective and not too costly a solution

Add some kerosene to SVO if it is very cold - as little as 10% will reduce the viscosity dramatically and increase the cetane rating so it will fire up quicker and cleaner.

Really hot good quality glowplugs and a good long glow helps too.

Where would i be able to buy kerosene from in reasonable quanity without getting visited by MI5 ?

Would adding kerosene help reduce the tendency of SVO to go gloopy at low temps ?

this is great, my 90 is reasonably economic anyway considering the tyres its got on....bout 25mpg. but if you can put in 50% or more fuel that costs nearly half the price of diesel that is gona be great!

i cant beleive more people dont do it!

You can buy the hose-in-hose heat exchanger and the values seperatly. Smartveg.com do the hose-in-hose Smartveg - advanced diesel to veg oil conversion system
I've seen 12v valves on ebay for £20 or less.

I installed mine a few months ago so this will be the first winter for me using veg and in a land rover. I really do need to get some quality glow plugs (what 'make' are quality glow plugs?)

My kit is this one...
Smartveg - advanced diesel to veg oil conversion system

I didn't pay that. I bought a broke one off ebay.

i'd like to see some comparative testing done between those hose in hose heaters and the exchanger types, i'm sure the exchanger ones would be more effective - the smartveg kit does look to be one of the most "thought out" kits
